Dignified creamy roastiness whose pores liberate a fruity, black currant-ish perfume...A little candy is hanging on to those complex baccate fumes to balance out the prevailing back bitterness from the roasted malt...Lactic hints in the body and pleasing, subtle earthiness...A very good porter/scotch ale hybrid, even if this bottled showed a little oxidation starting to hug the roastiness...

Very dark brown (almost black) with red hints. Lots of chocolate and malt on the nose. Nicely roasted nut and chocolate flavors dominate. Slight milky texture on the palate. Well done... thanks Lubiere.

Sweet malt and chocolate aroma. Slight diacetyl. Rich deep ruby color. Good carbonation with a tan head that sticks around a bit. Chocolate and roasted malt dominate this brew. Slight smokiness as well. As the label indicates, it does seem to be a cross between a Scotch ale and a Porter. Slight hops in the finish, but malt is by far the biggest flavor profile in this beer. A nice robust yet drinkable beer.

(Bottle) Pours a thin, almond head and an opaque body. Nose is of mild cask whiskey and cocoa - but somewhat of a disappointment. The flavour is a vanilla'd chocolate, slightly gritty and with a slow bitter cocoa finish. Good!

re-rate 7/5/05 - Cherry, vanilla and hazlenut nose. Chocolate, milk, a bit of espresso. Quite bitter with a tingly milk/dark fruit/malt finish. Good but an odd combo of flavors ---- Deep lactose, mocha and coffee liquor aroma. Nice tan head, sticking around as you drink. Milky, bitter chocolate flavor. Light mouthfeel.

Dark brown, thin tan head. Aroma of malt, vanilla, caramel, but also some wet dog. Flavor was sweet and malty, a touch roasty, with some caramel again. A touch thin for the style. Pretty nice, an unusual hybrid.

Head is initially average sized, frothy, light brown, mostly diminishing. Body is dark brown. Aroma is moderately malty (roasted grain, caramel, chocolate), with notes of licorice and vanilla. Flavor is moderately sweet, moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, moderately acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. A somewhat sour affair with a pleasant nose.

Sweet, malty aroma, hint of caramel. Head dissipates rather quickly. Flavour not very complex at all, somewhat bitter finish. Thin palate for such a dark beer.
