Brewbie (128), New York, USA Jul 7, 2008 12oz bottle. I like porters and I like scotch ale, so I figured this had to be a winner. dark ruby color with a huge foam head. light fruit and coffee aroma. sweet malt and fruit with a very dry finish. tasty
DandyWolfFloyd (255), Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 9, 2008 Aroma is full of dark chocolate, black patent malts, some roasty aromas as well. Its appearance is dark almost black with a big initial white head that dissipates into a thin slice of head. It’s flavor is full of dark malts, very well roasted, with some molasses, and some dark chocolate. It’s very velvety, with a nice burnt toast bite. Ughsmash (3082), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Aug 24, 2008 Bottled. Poured clear iced tea brown with a tall, fluffy cap of beige head.. sticky lacing followed it down. The aroma picked up dry-roasted sweeter chocolates upfront with caramel, a bit of coffee, and a touch of perplexing detergent following.. OK overall. The flavor had a bit more coffee than chocolate at the core surrounded by wet, grainy sourness and some coffee bitterness.. dried out on the finish, leaving a grainy, refreshing feel. Medium-bodied with moderate-to-high carbonation on the palate.. aside from some odd features, this felt fairly good mouthfeel-wise. Haslinger (552), Syracuse, New York, USA Jun 9, 2008 bottle from the Middle Ages mixpack, interesting name for a Scotch ale which is what the bottle said but apparently it’s a porter. Anyway the taste is a sweet, rich malt, some chocolate. Some fruit in the finish. very good would buy again dmradus (224), Syracuse, New York, USA Jun 1, 2008 Growler fresh from the brewery. Brown, red in direct light with a tan and quickly fading head. Soft roasted malts and nuts in the nose, as well as a nicely rounded fruity sweetness. Coffee and plums. Taste is slightly lactic sourness up front, fading to a pleasing grassy note. Then the malts take over: coffee and burnt chocolate malts, some toasted nuts as well. Lots of roast and, again, a simple and slight sweet dark fruit element. Finish is slight, with burnt malt bitterness predominant but no off-putting graininess. Palate is nicely effervescent at the top and fades to a pleasing creaminess as it moves in the mouth - could be slightly thicker overall. Very nice balance between sweet and roasted.
