Smoky aroma complete with pine, quite a nice full bouquet! The smoke comes through right up front in the taste then we switch into normal heavy IPA gear. Palate also has substantial malt and you can feel the hop resins in there. Very astringent finish. Very fine stuff. CamdenD (617), Madrid, Spain
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Jul 21, 2006 This was quite a good IIPA! Unlike the rater below, I found this quite different than other IIPAs I have tasted. The aroma is buttery hops, not floral or pine, and the taste is incredibly smooth with hints of cinnamon and malty sugar -- not tastes I normally associate with this style. It pours a generic dark gold, but the satisfyingly smooth palate hides the 10% abv and makes this beer almost into a summer quaffer. A fine, fine effort from Middle Ages, will have to try some others. JCapriotti (1378), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA

Sweetened citrus throughout with a nice pine touch at the end. Overall not a whole lot different than any other IIPA. But its well put together

| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jul 5, 2006 Dark amber color with a small white head. Lots of sweet malt in the aroma with some pine peaking through. Strong hop bitterness for a beer that I assume has been around for at least a year old (I have a bottle of the 11 year anniversary as well). A little bit of a soapy taste with this one and hints of butter and caramel that are not entirely pleasant. Perhaps this one is a bit past its prime so take this rating as a reflection on how this beer ages. Kinz (2215), Glen Allen, Virginia, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jul 3, 2006 Another thanks to Numenor, who really turned up with some great stuff for the 3rd Richmond Gathering. Medium orange amber, big pine aroma. Flavor of pine, with a very, very bitter finish. Balancing sweetness present, but offers little flavors to enhance the overall impression of pine hops. Not bad though, better than I make it sound here. Numenor (869), Richmond, Virginia, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jul 2, 2006 Another 3rd Richmond Gathering beer. Ruby-orange body with a light white head. Malty ending, grain with some hops. Complex taste and ending. maniac (2628), Richmond, Virginia, USA

| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jun 21, 2006 Notes from last night. On tap at the Hop Devil Grill, poured into a pint glass. Pours is clear orange/copper but almost looks reddish in the candle light of the dark HDG. Aroma is very present - buttery, creamy, and hoppy (Simcoe?) of course. The taste is a bit of a let down versus the aroma. Too thin and watery. Just hops and bitterness gets in the way of the flavor.
