Commercial Description:
Witbier with Brettanomyces
6.25 % Alcohol By Volume
20 International Bittering Units (IBUs)

CREATOR = Gabe

Beer Description: This Belgian witbier begins with equal parts malted wheat and pale barley to create its traditional cloudy white appearance. The addition of Brettanomyces gives ANCHOR its trademark "green apple" or "horse blanket" aroma and lends tartness to the flavor and finish. At over 6% ABV, this ANCHOR’s got a bit of more kick than most wits.

BEER LINE: "Raise your Anchor"

2009 Crew Brew Series: Heading into 2009, the NINE of us will each designnamebrew a beer to be released in 2009. We are all very excited about this series. It’s a great way to “freeze” this time and space – right before we jump into the new place and add new folks. These NINE beers will be fabulously eclectic and delicious.

Creator of This Beer: Since joining MSBC in 1998, Gabe has worked and mastered the complete gamut of jobs in our brewery. As Head Brewer, he uses his accumulation of brewing knowledge and experience to continually conceptualize and create amazing beers. With oak-barrel aging, a multitude of yeast strains and a plethora of processes in back pocket, Gabe is now experimenting with Brettanomyces and other "bugs". This beer combines his long-standing favorite beer style, witbier, with his new BFF, Brettanomyces. Raise your Anchor!

SONG INSPIRATION: “Through churning waters and midnight skies You were my anchor." lyrics from Anchor by Misery Signals on the Mirrors LP, released 2006

Bottle… Hazy straw-colored ale with a small, fizzy, white head. The nose is of pale grains, light funkiness and mild acidity. Light-bodied with fizzy carbonation. Well-balanced with crisp bitterness and gentle acidity. Crisp, clean, bone-dry finish.

Thanks to notalush for sharing this one. I disagree with him... brett does make this better. Very pale yellow straw colour with a thin white head. The aroma is lightly corianderish. Lemon citrus and a fairly wheaty/crackery maltiness. There is a bright zesty herbal bretty contribution that works with the spiciness. The flavours work very together. Nice and dry with a soft fluffy palate. Light cobwebby dustiness and a lingering soft citrus character. Mmm, tasty.

Bottle shared by shigadeyo. Poured hazy yellow color with a medium frothy white head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate bret yeast and citrus aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium citrus bittersweet flavor with a medium bittersweet finish of moderate duration. My expectations where met.

Stratford tasting @ Cletus house. Pours a pale golden yellow body with a white head. Dirty funky citrus dingy with some brett leather and light acidic lemon. Not that great.

Thanks to JW77. Cloudy yellow pour. Aroma is bretty, woody and a little funky tartness. Flavor is full of brett, malt some light wood and hay.

Bottle via a trade with americanbrew. Pours with a huge white head over a milky yellow body. Aroma of light brett phenols, horse blanket, orange and lemon citrus. Flowery and perfumey. Taste is dry and flowery with orange peel, light brett and citrus. I could drink a TON of this stuff! Not quite a Boulevard Saison Brett or Jolly Pumpkin’s Wit, but it is still very nice. Fizzy and dry mouthfeel.
