Commercial Description:
Witbier with Brettanomyces
6.25 % Alcohol By Volume
20 International Bittering Units (IBUs)

CREATOR = Gabe

Beer Description: This Belgian witbier begins with equal parts malted wheat and pale barley to create its traditional cloudy white appearance. The addition of Brettanomyces gives ANCHOR its trademark "green apple" or "horse blanket" aroma and lends tartness to the flavor and finish. At over 6% ABV, this ANCHOR’s got a bit of more kick than most wits.

It’s a great way to “freeze” this time and space – right before we jump into the new place and add new folks. These NINE beers will be fabulously eclectic and delicious.

Creator of This Beer: Since joining MSBC in 1998, Gabe has worked and mastered the complete gamut of jobs in our brewery. As Head Brewer, he uses his accumulation of brewing knowledge and experience to continually conceptualize and create amazing beers. With oak-barrel aging, a multitude of yeast strains and a plethora of processes in back pocket, Gabe is now experimenting with Brettanomyces and other "bugs". This beer combines his long-standing favorite beer style, witbier, with his new BFF, Brettanomyces. Raise your Anchor!

Appearance: Pours out a crystalline, light yellow body with a tall, foamy, white head. Smell: Light barley and wheat scents with a touch of lemon and spice and a positively congenial Brett character smelling only lightly musty wool dungarees and trodden hay. Taste: Delicate tastes of malted barley and soft wheat with a mild, restrained sweetness to it. Squirt of acidic lemon juice. Faint background spiciness. Very tempered Brettanomyces funkiness within - just enough to give you a lil’ hint and some added complexity. Not much in way of hops or bitterness, really. Semi-dry, crisp finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Well carbonated. Drinkability: Pretty likable! A light, refreshing witbier with a light, refreshing touch of Brett. The airy carbonation keeps things moving along at a nice pace.

Thanks to notalush for sharing this one. I disagree with him... brett does make this better. Very pale yellow straw colour with a thin white head. The aroma is lightly corianderish. Lemon citrus and a fairly wheaty/crackery maltiness. There is a bright zesty herbal bretty contribution that works with the spiciness. The flavours work very together. Nice and dry with a soft fluffy palate. Light cobwebby dustiness and a lingering soft citrus character. Mmm, tasty.

bomber - thanks frank!! pale gold with eggy white head; crisp lemons, brett, dough and grainy sweetness on the nose; soft and a little fizzy on the lips; get some orange peel, mild spice and some lemon cookies; texture is incredibility like and this brew is quite subtle; kind of the anti-MS brew; lovely faint haze and glow against the light; bone dry finish; complexity and varying brett flavors comes out as it warms; quite nice overall even for being on the light side and having some of the fruitiness zapped by the brett

Pours a mostly clear, light golden hue with a very slight haze. A thick, frothy head of off-white foam is incredibly well retained, leaving vertical columns of jagged lacing on the glass. The aroma is exactly as advertised, light and crisp wheat malt showing lightly sweet, with notes of lemon rind and white pepper. Dry, dusty brett imparts a bit of farmhouse funk. Flavors follow suit, mildly sweet and fresh with wheat grain, with a light candied sweetness and some dry, barnyard, horseblanket brett elements. Medium bodied, lively, and dry, the prickly carbonation intensifies the bretty, bitter lemon finish. Excellent witbier. Midnight Sun rules.

Big thanks to Ira for hooking me up with this bottle, poured into a tulip. Pours a clear bubbly yellow with a massive fluffy white head that hangs around for ages, fed by tons of bubbles streaming up from the bottle. There is decent lacing left behind as well. The aroma is very fresh and light with lots of lemons and a bit of grassy hints. There is a sweet wheat aroma in the background and the brett is detectable in the nose but certainly not obtrusive. The taste is a less bretty version of the nose. There is an initial lemony tartness that gives way to the sweetness of the wheat backbone and some light fruits, maybe pears, as well. The finish is dry and crisp with maybe the faintest hint of brett. The mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with active carbonation and very clean and crisp. This is a great wit, one of the best I’ve had recently and is exceptionally drinkable. I think it might get even better as the brett is allowed to work it’s magic, but it’s pretty damn stellar as is.

On tap @ the brewery. Musty brett aroma with a wheat malt backbone. Cloudy pale yellow with a frothy white head leaving a bit of lace. Great slightly sour Wit flavor with a sweet malt base. Light bodied with a refreshing crisp mouth feel and average carbonation. Wonderful beer and is very sessionable, might have to get a keg of this one.

Bottle from MaltOMeal at the August Hosuton Tasting. Thanks, Bill!
Pours a deep, cloudy yellow with a nose of lemon zest, yeasty citrus, and cigarette smoke. Flavor is light zemon zest with a sweet and sour finish. Leaves a pleasant film as it travels along the tongue. Light and refreshing; I’d drink more.

22oz bottle from Todd, who else... Pours a golden hazy brown with a thin soapy white head... Aroma of musty grapefruit and an old sock smell. Not bad actually.. flavors are predominantly refreshing with light citrus notes with a burst of old grapefruit but remains sweet through the middle. I like better than the bullfrog beer as opposed to Andrew!
