Commercial Description:
Inspired by local artist & roaster Michael Allen's eccentricly-named blend of coffee beans, Midnight Sun's brewers designed a beer recipe and infusion process that perfectly captures the alluring aroma, satisfying flavor and curious legend of Allen's Arctic Rhino Coffee. Arctic Rhino Coffee Porter combines two quintessential Pacific Northwest favorites: coffee and ale. The result is wonderfully romantic and robust--a duel-fueled porter that melds charismatic dark malt with freshly roasted coffee beans. The (un)rest is up to you.

Thanks to Daknole for the taste at the the McBackus Backyard Bash 08. Pours a dark blackish red with a tan head. Huge coffee aroma with a dry bitterness. Taste is slightly thin, big coffee, dry and slightly astringent. Very bold coffee porter that has a great aroma, but kind of left a little to be desried on the taste.

A dark brown colored brew with a small, very light tan head that fades to a collar. Coffee and espresso aromas, but devoid of any aromatic malt character and the coffee character isn’t very suave or complex. Flavor has some nice things going on, but is disappointing overall. Very light tasting, not much nuance or malt complexity. I want bolder flavors and aromas. I really like Midnight Sun. They make incredible beers. But this is a pretty weak example. They can and should do better.

OTH tasting 09/06/08 courtesy of THE gillard, thanks a ton Ryan. Pours very deep dark brown with near creamy mocha head. The aroma is full of bold coffee notes to go along with hints of roasty malts around the edges. The taste is much the same with up front grounded up coffee beans and malt roastiness in the background. It seems moderately smooth and a bit on the thin side. A bold session brew maybe. Yes.

Bottle (22oz). Shared with me, blankboy and garthicus by jerc and mabel. Deep clear ruby, huge mottled fluffy lasting creamy-fluffy head. Dry, spicy/yeasty aroma, roast malt and hints of cream, mint and herbal bitterness. Taste - quite light - grassy hops and mild coffee roast malt, a little sour in the finish. Light body, strongly carbonated, mildly astringent, quick finish. Decent enough.

Tasting at mcbackus 10/19. I brought this and was a tad bit disappoined. Dark brown pour, small tan head. Aroma of instant coffee, some dark chocolate and lots of roastiness. Flavor was a bit too harsh with coffee and a bit thin. Still a good beer, but not amazing.

22 oz. bottle. Pours very dark brown, not quite black, with a large foamy/sudsy tan head that quickly dissipated into an incomplete film and left no lace. The aroma is milder than I was expecting with coffee being the dominant trait along with some very light roast. The flavor is again mostly coffee with some mild roast and some herbal flavors as well, perhaps chicory? Bitter, dry finish. Watery and thin bodied. Overcarbonated and spritzy on the tongue. Probably not something I’d revisit anytime soon.

Pours a dark chocolate brown color with a foamy, well retained, beige colored head. Thick rings of lace coat the glass well. The aroma is brimming with coffee essence, roasty chocolate, and scorched caramel malts. There are hints of vanilla and a touch of lactose as well. Flavors follow suit, bold and roasty, with a heavy coffee and chocolate influence. The mouthfeel is substantial, but far from heavy, well carbonated, and semi-dry on the palate. Overall, this is a simple yet tasty, sessionable coffee porter. Nice brew.

Bomber via trade a ways back. This one gushed after sitting in the fridge for over a week. Pours black with a tan head. Nose is full of burnt coffee and big roasted malts. Taste has a done of coffee and a lot of big malty backbones. Overall this is a pretty killer coffee porter.
