Commercial Description:
“No hops were harmed in the brewing of this beer.” Gruit is an old style—one that incorporates spices, herbs and fruit but no hops. The latter detail makes this style very rare in modern times. Café Amsterdam’s Gruit is dark, strong and interesting. This combination of pale and dark malts, sage, thyme, cinnamon, black peppercorn and fresh orange peel composes distinctive, substantial flavors that meld together wonderfully. And at 12% ABV, this cellar-friendly ale is ready to lay you down! Thoroughly enjoy this old-world beer now but stash some away for later dwelvings.

( 22oz bottle, courtesy of AmEricanBrew ) Pours a hazy brown body with a medium beige head. Aroma of thyme, sage, honey, grass, and orange peel. Flavor of orange, caramel, pepper, thyme, bay leaves, sage, and some other spices. Interesting, but could not drink much of this. Alcohol well hidden.

Bottle from MaltOMeal at the August Houston tasting.
Pours a deep mahogany with a thin body. Aroma is pepper, Coke, watery molasses, and leather. Flavor is holy-moly mouth puckering sour and cherry/citrus sour. Average mouthfeel. Not too shabby.

There were few large bottles of this at Logan’s pre-GABF party. I had several samples trying to figure it out. Pour is a dead flat muddled brown. Aroma is big citrus fruit, dried fruit sweetness, pine juniper and a decent amount of alcohol. The taste is quite arresting, tasted liked soured prune juice, mixed with tart sweet cranberry juice, mixed with pine needles and a shot of grain alcohol to finish it off. Also some chocolate notes. Palate is as flat as the appearance, with alcohol coming through strong. I am VERY inexperienced rater of Gruits, but this one did little for me..

Bottle shared at Logan’s pre-GABF party. Brown pour. Citrusy and sour aromas. Sour flavor. I really didn’t know what to make of this beer and it really deserves a better, more in-depth review than I am able to give it from the sample I tried. But it was truly remarkable.
