Commercial Description:
“No hops were harmed in the brewing of this beer.” Gruit is an old style—one that incorporates spices, herbs and fruit but no hops. The latter detail makes this style very rare in modern times. Café Amsterdam’s Gruit is dark, strong and interesting. This combination of pale and dark malts, sage, thyme, cinnamon, black peppercorn and fresh orange peel composes distinctive, substantial flavors that meld together wonderfully. And at 12% ABV, this cellar-friendly ale is ready to lay you down! Thoroughly enjoy this old-world beer now but stash some away for later dwelvings.

( 22oz bottle, courtesy of AmEricanBrew ) Pours a hazy brown body with a medium beige head. Aroma of thyme, sage, honey, grass, and orange peel. Flavor of orange, caramel, pepper, thyme, bay leaves, sage, and some other spices. Interesting, but could not drink much of this. Alcohol well hidden.

Bottle shared by shigadeyo. Poured a clear brown color with an average frothy off-white head that mostly lasted with excellent lacing. Good aroma of spice, yeast, and roasted malt. Medium to full body with thick smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy bitter&sour flavor with a complex bittersweet finish of medium to long duration. Interesting complex brew.

Draft at Cafe Amsterdam. Wow, what an artful beer. It’s awesome that Midnight Sun collaborated with Anchorage’s best publican to create this unique beer ... you don’t see gruit every day. And I couldn’t drink a lot of this either. It’s definitely an acquired taste, in some ways related to Belgian sours maybe, drinking with a puckeringly tart character, but also exceptionally sweet. Spicy and floral, like tip-toeing thru the daisies, herbal, mountain-y. Artwork in a glass. (#3564, 6/24/2009)

Bottle shared by JW77 and wow this is good stuff!! Brown pour, small head. Aroma is caramel, light chocolate, herbal notes and some funk. Flavor is MUCH more tart than I would have guessed. Damn this is good. Cannot even taste the alcohol. Just some spices, wood, sourness, earthy funk and pure deliciousness. Seek this one out for sure!!

Bottle thanks to Americanbrew. Pours with a tan, frothy head over a very dark brown body. Aroma of maple, molasses, alcohol, rummy, banana esters, leather and spice. Taste is very sweet with berries, thyme, alcohol, molasses, a light tart notes, spruce, orange and a bit salty. Alcohol on the palate, light bubbles.

Bottle. Black-brown beer with a tan head. Malt and toffee aroma. Berry/currant/grape and rich malt flavor with light spice. Medium bodied. Berry, grape, and currant lingers with light spice.
