Commercial Description:
Conspiracy is a collaboration brew between Midnight Sun Brewing and Pelican Pub & Brewery. During a trip to Alaska for the Great Alaskan Beer & Barley Wine Fest, Ben Love of Pelican conspired with Gabe Fletcher and Ben Johnson of Midnight Sun to brew a Belgian-Style Black Beer. Conspiracy features a rich, spicy aroma with hints of dark fruit, raisin, roast and caramel. A toasted and slightly roasty flavor lead into caramel and a super smooth finish. Debittered black malt was used to get the jet-black color and tan head without adding significant roast flavor. The brewers also added Belgian candi sugar and Mexican Piloncillo sugar (a maple-sugar-like brown sugar) to increase fermentability and depth of flavor. Conspiracy comes in at 8.5 percent ABV and 25 IBUs

RBSG 2007. Black color with no head. A little roasted malt aroma. Vaguely sweet roasted malt taste. Very plain, unfortunately.

As the style on the bottle would imply; this beer is black. A tan mocha colored head is full and tight but fades quickly and leaves little lace. Spicey lending toward a soapy quality aroma with dark caramel malts. Not a lot going on aromas wise however it is not bad smelling. Dark fruit of black currant, burnt blackberry, roasted plums, and some dark chocolate. Would be higher but everything is really laid back. As much as I love the other Midnight Sun beers I’ve tried this one just doesn’t seem to meet the standards. Now it is good but I expected more. Roasty bitter dark chocolate flavors with belgian spice qualities. Again dark fruits of black currant, black licorice, burnt caramel and some vanilla. Medium mouthfeel to full. Finish is long. I will have to see how my next bottle compares. As it warms more flavors come about and bring things together. Getting very nice.

Pours an almost opaque black with a light brown head. Aroma is malty, raisins, and clove. Flavor is malty sweet with raisins, some clove and a light yeasty finish.

Bottle courtesy of hopdog! Tall, brown froth resting atop a blackened abyss. Nose is roasty, soft coffee, mild yeast, burnt caramel and dark fruit. Taste is roasted malts, more burnt caramel, coffee notes, soft yeast and dark fruits. Perhaps this could be described as a abbey dubbel mixed with a stout? Body is creamy, smooth, and medium-full to full on the palate. Carbonation is prickly at times. Finishes with more roasted malts, caramel, soft yeast, faint spices, more pronounced dark fruit (mainly raisin), and hop bitterness. Bittersweet throughout the finish.

Bottle from SamuraiArtist. Yeast, anice, and some malt in the aroma. Black body. Full palate. Malty taste with yeast and coffee. Very lightly sour actually. Interesting for sure. More like a saison as it warms--getting more hints of alcohol, spices and heavier malts. Good stuff.

Pours a dark brown. Aroma is strong, strange, and tough to decipher. Rather meaty, with some licorice, prunes and a spice presence. Odd, but balanced. Tastes of chocolate, spiciness (yeast? cloves?), light roast coffee. Finishes like a yeastier, fruitier/spicier robust porter would. Balanced, full, and interesting enough to keep me wondering. When the glass was done, I still didn’t quite know what the hell I just drank. I’d say that’s something worth seeking out.
