Commercial Description:
Conspiracy is a collaboration brew between Midnight Sun Brewing and Pelican Pub & Brewery. During a trip to Alaska for the Great Alaskan Beer & Barley Wine Fest, Ben Love of Pelican conspired with Gabe Fletcher and Ben Johnson of Midnight Sun to brew a Belgian-Style Black Beer. Conspiracy features a rich, spicy aroma with hints of dark fruit, raisin, roast and caramel. A toasted and slightly roasty flavor lead into caramel and a super smooth finish. Debittered black malt was used to get the jet-black color and tan head without adding significant roast flavor. The brewers also added Belgian candi sugar and Mexican Piloncillo sugar (a maple-sugar-like brown sugar) to increase fermentability and depth of flavor. Conspiracy comes in at 8.5 percent ABV and 25 IBUs

Pours deep brown with a ring of tan head around the glass. Nose and flavor are chocolate, licorice and a bit of soy with a slight smokey finish. Creamy on the palate.

Dark brown beer with tan halo of suds. Malty and raisin-like nose with a touch of B.O., ash, and aged malt notse. Mouthfeel on the thin side but nice toffee and malt flavors coming through...The toffee characteristics are quite vivid actually...just a little weak body keeping it from being stellar.

Bottle shared by alexsdad06. Poured dark brown color with an average light brown head that diminished slowly and produced good lacing. Good roasted, caramel, dark fruit and yeast aroma. Medium body with a smooth. Medium to heavy complex sweet dark fruit flavor with a medium to heavy complex sweet finish. This is a standout brew.

10/08/2008: Midnight Sun (with Pelican) Conspiracy Belgian-Style Black Beer pours the color of liquid semi-sweet chocolate and has a large, dense tan head. The aroma has dark fruits and berries with even some chocolate-covered cherry like quality. Wow, the flavor was completely unexpected. It is quite delicious and is really full in both flavor and body. The flavor has a smooth, rich, and velvety deepy caramelized maltiness with an infusion of some sort of dark fruit and berries. There is also a roasty undertone as well as some subtle smokiness in the finsh. A small yeasty tone shows up in the middle and finish, but that’s it and actually makes it taste more like chocolate in the aftertaste (even more chocolate as it warms). Absolutely no alcohol to be seen anywhere. This beer has a medium-full to full body and a really nice mouthfeel. This is a really nice beer that is rich, complex, and very tasty!

22 fl. oz. bottle (8.5% Alcohol by Volume, 25 IBUs) shared by at the weekly Party Source gathering. Thanks! Rating #69 for this beer...

A wonderful bonus bottle from Jabic...thanks! Black in color with very slight island lacing. The nose was dominated by aromas of dark chocolate, crème and vanilla. In the mouth threre was actually quite a bit of carbonation making this come off as fresh and almost "light". The flavor has some bitter coffee grounds with just some balancing chocolate richness. This was a well stored bottle that drinks quite nice.

Bottle from CaptainCougar. Pour was dark brown-black, some reddish colored edges, ok head, but not overwhelming for the style. Aroma of spices, dark fruits, light chocolate and roast. Flavor is a dry vinous-fruity base over chocolate, bready-yeast, brown-sugar and licorice even. An interesting brew that was definitely enjoyable at cellar temps vs. 40F fridge temps. The mouthfeel was dry, spicey-zing, a tad hot. Nice, not great, enjoyable, nonetheless. Thanks, Tom, for the bottle!
