Dark beer with a huge, fluffy tan head with lots of sticky lace. Lactic acid and chocolate in the nose. Burnt toast, grains, bitter chocolate, some caramel sweetness, and noticable lactic acid. Grassy bitterness in the finish. Another really nice beer from Midnight Sun.

The Dan Journal #229. Tasted 8/20/08. 22oz bomber. Thanks, Keir! Dark and pitch hued. Layer of beige head. Aromas of cocoa and chocolate, with a touch caramel. Candy and cookies. Medium to full bodied with a lively effervescence. Sweet base malts with a slight burnt character. Nice bitter citrus note. Solid!

Poured an opaque black color with a medium sized, tan head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malts, cocoa, vanilla, smoke, and some dark fruitiness. Taste of roast, smoke, lactose, bitter dark chocolate, vanilla, and more dark fruits.

Pours a deep black with a large foamy deep tan almost brown head that left sticky lacing. Aroma of dark bitter chocolate, some tropical fruits, roasted malt, some coffee notes and light roasted nuts. Flavor of roasted malt, light smoke, some hop flavor, bitter Belgian Chocolate, earthy, some smoke, light caramel, some coffee. Loads of flavor, a bit thin, but with the aroma and flavor you are almost thinking it’s going to be an imperial stout. Tingly carbonation.

Jet black color. Large rich beige head shows good retention as it dwindles into a thin but creamy cap. Enticing aromas of cocoa and espresso intermingle with prunes, plasticlike phenols, and chocolate fudge. Lightly smoky with a suggestion of tar, as well. Snug carbonation softy hugs the palate. Bottle conditioned. Snappy medley of airy phenols and burnt malt hulls give way to a creamy inundation of vanilla beans and nougat. Fairly dry, yet full, fluffy and dense at the core. Malts are well-extracted and remarkably deep and pillowy. Notes of leather echo the bright yet understated prune and raisiny esters which enhance the malty luster while bolstering quaffability tenfold. Melted toffee lurks in the background. Delayed twang of lactose adds chewiness to the body as it fuses with the fruity esters to create a chocolate taffy effect. Mild note of charcoal and ash contribute some welcomed coarseness to other otherwise predominantly soft and slick body. Teasing glimpse of black cherries dots the well-rounded finish, as tinges of black licorice, cocoa, earthy roast and vivid chocolate-mousse linger. Overt sweetness tends to plague milk stouts, but not this one. Quite a feat. The entire bomber went down rather quickly and effortlessly. Really well-balanced and exhibits excellent restraint on multiple levels.
