shigadeyo (2210), Harrison, Ohio, USA Jul 10, 2009 6/19/2009: Midnight Sun Kilt Burner is has quite a bit of smoke to it. Sweet, caramelized malt is paired with peat-like smoke in both the aroma and flavor. The sweet maltiness and almost harsh smokiness almost seem to be at odds. I love smoke in my beer, but it is almost overdone in this one to the point that the peat smoke reminds me of the way a geyser smells, but more mineral than sulfur. This beer has a medium-body and can be a bit difficult to get down at times.
Draught (6 fl. oz. sample) at the Midnight Sun Brewing Company Loft in Anchorage, Alaska. Rating #3 for this beer.
AmEricanbrew (1747), Louisiana, USA Jun 2, 2009 Growler from the brewery. Clear brown with a viscous tan head. Big ass smoky peat aroma with some nutty malts. Mouthfeel is a little thin. Flavor is massive smoke peated malts with some sweetness in the background, nice lingering finish. The smoke is more intense here than many smoked beers, and certainly more than any other Scotch ale I’ve tried. Great brew. savnac (394), Palmer, Alaska, USA May 23, 2009 On tap @ the brewery. A smokier version of the Full Curl Scottish that the MS used to brew. Aroma is very strong smoked peat, a soapy antiseptic smell and a bit of alcohol. Clear brown/amber with a tiny off white head. The flavor is strong smoke on top of a sweet malt base. Medium bodied with a slick mouth feel, soft carbonation and a long smokey finish. This was my second time trying this and the smoke has mellowed out a bit but is still a bit too strong and out of balance for my taste.
