Arome contains some dark malt, but this beer is infected. This is the third bottle of infected beer that I’ve bought from Midnight Sun and I’m quite upset. Who knows when the next time I’ll visit Alaska is. WMMALASKA (10), Anchorage, Alaska, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Mar 13, 2005 I am rating this beer on a experience I had with thier 22oz bottle. Overall not Midnight Suns best effort. The truely deceptive thing about this beer is that out of the bottle it feels a little incomplete and the reality is that it is. This beer is SIGNIFICANTLY better when drank from a Nitris Draft system. The beer gets a compleatly different flavour (kinda mocha) and just a fabulous mouthfeel. It’s a compleatly different beer and is deffinatly the way it’s MENT to be drank. Marc (477), Yokosuka, Japan
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jan 11, 2005 Roasted grain, Coffee and chocolate nose with a touch of hops. Same in the mouth. A little astringent. Notes of Black malt and tannins, and bright herbal flavors. Big Coffee/grain finish. PorterPounder (3138), Tallahassee, Florida, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Sep 3, 2004 Sampled at the brewery - Black as night appearance, very tick off-white head, smoky, burnt wood and roasty aroma. Flavor has some burnt marshmallow accents sitting on top of the bittersweet chocolate. Detect a little bit of coffee in there as well. Decent, clean mouthfeel. All in all a very good stout. | 2.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 4/10 | 3/5 | 9/20 | Sep 1, 2004 (Draft: Midnight Sun Brewing Co. in Anchorage, AK) The flavor is strongly yeasty, fairly light on the dark roasted malty, mildly bitter, and overall, the flavor is very light for a stout; Similarly, the palate is very light for the style; The nose is reminiscent of a Belgian, being yeasty and spicy; Very dark brown, almost black, but brown at the edges; Disappointing for a brewery of such high quality, and apparently it’s 99% sure that this beer will be retired soon to make way for an all-new, completely different Mammoth Stout OldGrowth (1426), North Carolina, USA
| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Aug 10, 2004 Bottle, Lite nose. Like alka seltzer or chalk. Reddish black color, light does go through. Big head that settle down. Sweet flavors chocolate syrup and coca colaish. Very bubbly. Smooth and creamy. Some bite on the finish. Bottle let out a big pop when I opened, not enjoyable. Hoping it was a bad bottle. jsquire (2107), St. Marys, Ohio, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Feb 10, 2004 Black beer with root beer like head and a nose of dark sweet molasses and some berry. Soft chocolate and subtle bittersweet coffee flavors. Nice hop bitterness in the middle. Soft mouthfeel. Very drinkable. BBB63 (4232), La Porte, Indiana, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Feb 8, 2004 Thanks JSquire for sharing the bottle. Pours to a deep brown with reddish and amber highlights, little head or lace. The aroma hints of molasses, caramel, mocha, coffee, currents, berries, floral hops and zesty yeast esters. The taste starts malty smooth with fruity undertones. A hoppy bite towards finish. Some coffee notes also detected. The mouthfeel is creamy and lively with a astringent touch. A good sort of sweet stout, just short in complexity and depth.
