Nose is of oak, vanilla and roast malt. Seems similar to other Midnight Sun brews. Taste is of oak, vanilla and malt. Mouthfeel is sweet. Very nice.

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Dec 18, 2009 bomber - dark brown with fizzy white head; super fruity nose with prunes, brown sugar; quite strong up front though smooths out in the finish; very sweet with dark fruits, cherries and pepper; can’t believe that this is 14%+; pretty nice but for the style, I was expecting a little more from MS; drank this over 9 months ago, so would be interested to try with some age drfabulous (1267), Columbia, Missouri, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 6, 2009 22 ounce bottle via trade with SuzyGreenberg. Pours a lovely brown/black dark color. First sip is wow. Oak and vanilla. Lots of caramel. Not a sweet bomb by any means. Very tasty Quad. I get a bit of that Cabernet in the taste. Not too much. Typical Quad fruit, dates, cherries, raisin. This is a tremendous beer. I’m in debt to this trade. kramer (2482), Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Nov 21, 2009 22 oz bottle. Pours a dark amber, almost brown, body with a large two finger plus frothy light brown head. Lots of lacing. The nose is thick fruity malts, rather vinous overall, with some light oak. No alcohol on the nose, which I find very surprising. Plums, figs, raisins, and some yeast notes. Very thick and heavy flavor with tons of plum and dark fruits, residual sugars, a nice oak profile, and pretty moderate alcohol on the finish, which is impressive on its own. You can really pick out the Cabernet flavors really well. Very sweet and clingy on the palate with an extremely long lingering finish. The alcohol is a little warming down to the belly, but again, pretty well in check. Pretty nice beer. satan165 (603), River Grove, Illinois, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Nov 16, 2009 opaque pour with tight, dense head that has a filthy hue. aroma is strong just from opening the bottle, nutty doppelbock alcohol even from afar. a closer take reveals more caramelized nuts and dark pit fruits that include a sweetish tinge reminiscent of a bent take on candi sugar, nearly strawberry. big alcohol has its own esters that far surpass the yeast itself. the aftertaste is strong coating chocolate, proceeded by the wood which i never found in the nose. oak is dark, wet and lightly rotten. while this certainly tastes strong i dont know that i would guess 14% were this sample done blindly. this has all the great qualities of a quad or any successful big beer; however it may be the biggest of them all, or at least in my modest resume. bleeng (600), Spring near Beersel, Texas, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Nov 15, 2009 Bottle thanks to maltomeal. Sweet, chocolately, viscous, sweet. This one was well into the night-I’d like to try this one again. ¾ (4999), Colorado, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Nov 13, 2009 trappist glass. dense dark brown body with a rich, creamy and fine-bubbled dark tan head, lasting retention, beautiful swirling pattern. nose nails the dried apricots i’m sitting here eating... rich caramel and sticky toffee is infused with a red wine/sherry note (mild) with light barrel tannins. rich, tangy and full, frothy on the back, lightly peppery up front. body is exceptionally dense but well-suited for the texture and level of sweetness. light pepper/nutmeg/allspice notes here and there, huge chewy munich/caramel/light roast malt flavor. the base beer speaks more than the barrel, as it should be. dried apricots, dried prunes, dried dates, that thick and chewy character of the dried fruit is perfectly mimicked by the chewy malt body. sweetness is substantial but not overdone, with dark candy sugar and caramelized prune juice coming to mind. resinous damp wood notes in the finish with a light wine/red grape/dried peach touch of sweet. awesome beer throughout. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Oct 18, 2009 Bottle courtesy of MaltOMeal. Dark brownish red color. The Aggie fans here are pissed to hell. Not good for the team. Smells of a nice coffee bready porter. Tastes of heavy malts with rich ABV flavor.
