It pours completely black with dark brown head. Lots of tar, tobacco, overripe fruit and paint in aroma. Soft mouthfeel but you hardly recognise it as the flavour explodes in your mouth with chocolate, bitter hops, tar and burnt malts. It has a long alcoholic finish. Overall its too much of it all to be honest but its truely amazing how many tasting notes you can get out of this beer. Im looking forward to try it again in a year or so when it must be more tempered. tronraner (1934), Seymour, Tennessee, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Feb 8, 2009 Bottle at our Febmergency tasting, best by 12/12/17. Pours black with amber extremities and nut much head. The aroma is alcohol, chocolate, espresso, vanilla, oak, and cherry. The flavor is strong alcohol, coffee, some distant oak, vanilla, and ash. The alcohol is surprisingly well masked. Altogether this is pretty textbook for the extreme imperial stout genre, but it’s very well executed. Oh, and it’s my 1600th rating! Pours black. Seriously, black, not much head. The aroma is powerful and reminds me of liquor. Lots of burn and wood in the nose along with coffee and a bit of molasses. The carbonation is low and the mouthfeel is semi-thick. Alcohol burns throughout but the other flavors are just as strong. The finish is nicely sweet with hints of creamy coffee and smoke, that’s the tamest thing on this one. The initial palate is rife with powerful alcohol notes, but it all seems like a fine sipping whisky just with more molasses and coffee. This is a beast of a beer, but I don’t think I could enjoy more than one of these at a time. No grace or subtly or attempt to hide the alcohol on this one. Still, for a sipper it is very nice. larstangaa (104), Denmark

Markant meget af det hele - mast ned i en 17,5% alkohol. Tung, fed, sort, oceaner af hårdt ristet malt og distinkt humle. Overvældende - bør prøves igen om nogle år. I had this beer sitting in my cellar for the past 2 months and it got me thinking "will this beer be any better in 3-8 years?". Only one way to find out and that is to open it now and see if I could somehow predict if it will cellar well, meaning will it be better with some age on it?
Poured a deep thick, oil like black liquid and formed a thin head leabing some foam resyting around the sides of the glass. Looks great.
Aroma - a combination of coal, soy sauce, hops, and chocolate. I debated giving this a 7 or an 8 but felt that the 8 best represented my overall feel of the aroma. In short - I liked it.
Flavor hits right away with a soy sauce similarity fading into a very hoppy, and robust stout. Slightly dry with some roasted coffee being present. Alcohol is present but not as over the top as I wouold expect from a 17% beer. Much smoother than I thought it would be, especially from all the roller coaster reviews I have read comparing it to a fresh World Wide Stout. Will this age and mellow out well? I think so. I may have to pick up another bottle to find out... after4ever (2809), Brier, Washington, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 14/20 | Dec 19, 2008 375, foiled, corked, and baled. Pours jet black, with a loose, sudsy, surging, sloppy burnt tan head. Plenty of lace, and, even after a fair little while, a decent slurry of foamy film across the top. And this is not the newest bottle by any means; it has been sitting for 8 months. Roasty, plummy, highly boozy nose--boozy enough to give you a bit of a headache. Creamy medium body. A bit oily, but not especially sticky. Roasty, chocolatey, plummy, licoricey, and quite boozy mid-palate. Very good, very attention-grabbing. Not completely amazing but certainly not a disappointment at all.
