Roast, liqourice, chcolate, oak and alcohol notable in the nose. Flavour of vanilla, roast, sweetness, prunes, syrup and chocolate. Quite complex and smooth. Full bodied. Dry. Sweet, chocolaty and roasted end. Very well hidden alcohol. Nice. Miksu (2220), Jyväskylä, Finland

Thick, sweet, roasty, and oaky aroma with notes of wooden pencil, charcoal and salty licorice. The flavor is roasty, leathery, oaky and warming with licorice, coffee and charcoal. Good long finish. Fairly oaky and boozy but ends the tasting session nicely and tastes long on a train ride to home. bitbucket (2034), Kirkland, Washington, USA

Coffee and chocolate aroma. Full body, minimal carbonation. Taste of coffee, chocolate, licorice. Dry smoke and coffee finish. zapprentice (310), East Setauket, New York, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 11, 2009 Stellar beer. Strong chocolately aroma which just came out very well in the flavor. Really nice sweet booze finish. I enjoyed very much. fredandboboflo (1418), East Setauket, New York, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | May 10, 2009 Bottle, huge thanks to andersand. Aroma of oaky coffee and cocoa, richly boozy, roasted malt. Flavor very rich, decadent, with big chocolate notes, blended marvelously with the oak. My only complaint was that the alcohol sweetness became a bit much, even after 2-3 ounces. But that just kept it from being a super-beer, still quite excellent. LilBeerDoctor (1505), East Setauket, New York, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 10, 2009 Bottle. Pours black with a thick chocolate colored head. Aroma of booze, vanilla, and roasted malt. Flavor of roasted and charred malt notes initially with a sweet, boozy finish. Rich palate. Good beer, but it didn’t particularly wow me. A little bit heavy on the alcohol, although I guess that’s expected with a 12.3% abv.

| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Apr 25, 2009 25cl bottle. Dense dark brown. Charred barrel heavy in he nose, some whiskey and soy evident. Sweet peat and burnt vegetables. Holy shit, intensely astringent, hugely peat, coarse, smoky whiskey all over this. Difficult to like, honestly. Some lightly sweet charred plums in the finish. Hmm. iowaherkeye (1856), Los Angeles, California, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Apr 11, 2009 25cL bottle, Holdbar til 31-12/2012--thank you cgarvieuk for the bottle. Big fat carbonation, apparently. Poured deep brown--black in my glass--with a substantial 2 1/2 finger oily tan head, fair retention. Big pine and tar up front in the aroma, with plenty of dark chocolate and cold pressed coffee roast behind. There are hints of raisins and molasses. Flavor again has big pine right up front with some coffee and tar. Finishes with some molasses notes, though semi-dry and bitterness only around a 3, surprisingly. I can pick up on some oak notes, but not a lot, and moderate alcohol warmth. Full bodied with light prickly carbonation. This beer is the reason the first two releases of Surly’s Darkness were so damn good--a big piny hopped imperial stout cannot be beat.
