Mikkeller Barrel Aged Black as Coal

(Bottle) Pours black with a big, fast decreasing brown head. The aroma has an extremely intense and compact character of woody, citric and resiny hops (dry hopped), deep, tar-like aromatic coffee roast, sweet syrupy malt and fresh red wine/vanilla-ish oak. The burned malt is almost a bit smoky from time to time. Hints of violet, brown sugar and honey. The flavour is medium to heavily sweet with a good bitterness to back it up. Citrus, resin, tar, coffee, oak wood and brown sugar. The mouthfeel is a bit syrupy and sticky yet smooth and soft carbonated. Some alcohol warmth is present without any annoying alcohol taste. Lingering aftersweetness with some burned roast to save the day. Near full bodied. Typical Mikkeller.

Flaske. Kulsort øl med et lille skumhoved. Dejlig duft af malt og en anelse Brændt kaffe. Smagen er overdomineret af alkohol, og fadlagringen kan ikke ænses i denne voldsomme øl. Kunne nok blive bedre med en smule mere lagring i flasken, men jeg tror faktisk den er for voldsom. Men igen, ikke nogen dårlig øl.

250 ml bottle from Ølbutikken. Well, black as coal, no clarity. A thin layer of brown foam on top, quickly diminishing, leaving som bubbles clinging to the glass. Smells good. At first a strong scent of alcohol-soaked plums and vanilla, then heavily roasted malts, dark chocolate and wood. Flavor is sweet and bitter to the limit, still kind of balanced and complex. Tar and candysugar. Heavily roasted malts and milk-chocolate. Lots of coffee, lots of bittering hops, lots of wood. Big-bodied. Thick, oily mouthfel. Lasting tar-ish bitterness in the ending. The perfect sipper.

A Mes rate. Bottle thanks to the top bloke that is Harrisoni. Well, black as coal is certainly right. The initial pillowy tan head has now settled to a faint collar but nae bother. Aroma is rich as hell and certainly warming but maybe just a little too tarry for me to really get my rocks off. The flavour however is full on pan handle material. I’ve only had a few sips and already there are little coals of joy stoking up a bonfire in my belly. Massive Mikkeller craziness. Dark and dominating, demanding I don a gimp mask and let it put clamps on me turnips. Somehow I stay focussed and out of S&M gear and carry on drinking. The alcohol is huge and kicks a path to your stomach leaving a perverted sting in its wake. Plenty of brute force is added by some insane hoppage which links up with with some fat chewy malt that it finds down an alleyway and they both slap you round the head til you are short of breath. More punch is added by some angry carbonation which you can feel aaaaaall the way down baby. Mad as an angry spanner munching frog. Tastier than Sophie Ellis Bextor. Yet another thing to love Mikkeller for...

Bottle,this was a very tasty IPS with a rich creamy and hoppy flavor and a nice but not overwhelming bourbon taste in the finish,i got this from a friend you went to Denmark and brought back a couple of treats i saved for tonight.CHEERS!

On tap @ EBF 2008. Totally black body with a medium but diminishing brown head. Aroma is dominating by chocolate, but also dark malt and coffee. Flavor is sweet malt, coffee, mocha, hops and alcohol. Long finish, well balanced and very nice for sipping.

250 ml bottle - thanks to after4ever for sharing; get black with razor thin chocolate colored head; huge, intoxicating aromas of bourbon, wood, vanilla and coffee; drinks rich and very dry; a little too much on the sweet side for me; drinks smooth again for the strength, but the flavors not quite in balance

Bottle. Black colour with large creamy brown mostly lasting head. Aroma is roasted malt and chocolate. Bitter flavor with notes of chocolate and coffee. Creamy palate.
