However the appearance was the first indicator as to how impressive this beer was to become. Initial impressions - expected a strong coffee flavour, yet its subtlety was a pleasant suprise. Building to a crescendo of bitterness and a slight malty taste inherent in many of his beers. Suprisingly more carbonated than expected in a stout, yet smooth and extremely drinkable. Exquisite beer and left me wanting.

Pours as black as can be with a nice head, beautiful lacework. Tastes like a perfect coffee stout. Nice creamy mouthfeel, medium carbonation. Finishes bitter, leaving my mouth tasting like a used coffee pot. That’s a good thing. potbeercollege (418), Boulder, Colorado, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Dec 21, 2009 Bottle. Black with beautiful chocolate brown head that will not go away. The aroma is truly wonderful - lots of sweet roasted chocolate, strong coffee, rich caramel and oatmeal. Taste is initially sweet though is quickly replaced with a mild bitterness of burnt chocolate. Palate has lots of carbonation (somewhat unexpected) and overall is smooth. This just may be the perfect stout... its hard to imagine anything else as satisfying or as beautifully crafted. Tastes like bitter chocolate, coffee, and the dust from a chocolate malt grinding session. Smooth and rich with a very nice mouthfeel. Certainly well crafted! tokyogoat (571), San Diego, California, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 17, 2009 Pours espresso black with a thin tan halo of head.
Nose is heavy on coffee, not too acidic on the nose, fairly roasty.
Taste is thinner than the beer geek brunch, less chewy, less obvious oat character, slight hop bitterness, slight acidic coffee bitterness, flavors arent as rich as expected, but none over shadow the others. nice coffee, roasted malt, oat, and floral hop flavors all play quite well together. glennmastrange (865), hobe sound, Florida, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 16, 2009 Bottle. Heavy malt notes of dark bread, dark chocolate and strong coffee, moderate resin for the hops, light leather for the yeast, with background notes of raisin, charcoal, toffee and alcohol. Head is average size, creamy/frothy, light brown with fair lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is black. Flavor starts moderately to heavily sweet and lightly acidic, then finishes lightly sweet and acidic, moderately bitter and a touch salty. Palate is medium to full, creamy with a soft carbonation and a lightly astringent and dry finish. This has to be the fullest and richest Stout I’ve had to date. Excellent in every respect.
