MatSciGuy (627), Rosemount, Minnesota, USA Oct 31, 2009 Pitch black pour with almost no head. Strong sweet and roasty malt aroma, ashy, charred, touch of bell pepper, touch of coffee. Flavor is pretty hot, chocolate, coffee, super deep and roasty. Dry and bittersweet finish. Pet food. Why oh why do you have to find all these odd flavors Andy?
tytoanderso (1381), St. Louis Park, Minnesota, USA Oct 26, 2009 Nip bottle courtesy of Brad and Eben. Charred marshmallow and grease initially on the nose. Motor oil. Stale coffee soaked wood. Alcohol, char and warmed up motor engine. Pours a flat, oily black. Flavor has lots of grease, chocolate, stale coffee, watered down melted chocolate. Liquorice, anise and char. Flabby, greasy, oily and slick body. Who knew that a beer could taste like like a car engine smells? Further evidence that I really don’t like these N. European Imperial Stouts. Lagunitasfan (432), San Diego, California, USA Aug 4, 2009 Shared @ DDG release party. Dark brown to black with red tints. Tan ring. Not much carbonation at all. Nose is dark chocolate/cocoa and richly roasted malt. Taste is a solid mouthfull. Bitter and sweet. Coffee and dark chocolate. The sweetness lingers to a bitter smack at the finish. Liked it a lot. AndreasJaeger (101), Helsingborg, Sweden Jul 23, 2009 Bottle @ Ölbutikken. Pours black with brown head. Coffe roasted malt bitter chocolate licorice. Taste coffe sweet strong roasted malt vanilla and toffee. GAManiac (1120), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Jul 20, 2009 25cl bottle courtesy of fonefan poured into a snifter.
No doubt about the blackness of this one as it pours completely black straight out of the bottle and settles in the glass with no light penetrating. There’s a smallish tan head that hangs around for a while and leaves spotty lacing.
The smell is big and dominated by dark burnt malts with some spent coffee grinds and dark chocolate as well. Some licorice and dark fruits creep in as well, but the overall smoky character is what struck me more than anything.
The taste is even more smoky. It’s almost like an amped up smoked stout with a huge smoked malt backbone that really dominates throughout. There’s some bakers chocolate and hints of vanilla and licorice as well as the aforementioned coffee. But the finish is sooo smoky and leaves a big lingering aftertaste between sips.
The mouthfeel is on the full side, like a dessert with the thick sweetness up front. The finish is altogether different with a dry campfire smokiness, like a cigar aftertaste.
Well, I’ve definitely been looking forward to this one and I had no idea how smoky and charred this beer was going to be. I actually really like it, but I was definitely caught off guard by the smoke which is much, much more dominant than the coffee. They call this one Beer Geek Breakfasts big brother, but I’m not so sure their more than just distant cousins. Massive thanks to Jan for the opportunity. bitbucket (2024), Kirkland, Washington, USA May 25, 2009 Nip. Thanks, Thewolf and after4ever! Pours opaque black with a lacy brown head. Alcohol-laden aroma of chocolate and coffee. Medium-full body, nearly still. Coffee, chocolate, with some oatmeal and brown sugar in the taste. VikingHammer (362), Lynnfield, Massachusetts, USA May 20, 2009 Thanks to Fonefan. Pours black with a thin brown head into my snifter. Good Lacing. Head disapates rather quickly. Nose is full of chocolate, coffee and some cereal grains. Texture is oily with average carbonation. Moderate sweetness gives way to a light bitter end. Malt seems to stick to the tongue. Very Nice stout. ThomasE (5179), Copenhagen, Denmark May 11, 2009 Black colour with a small creamy light brown head. Coffee roasted, light earthy aroma with notes of chocolate, liqourice and hops. Chocolate sweet and vague hoppy flavor wih liqourice notes. Toasted, light hoppy finish.
