Commercial Description:
Brewed by Mikkeller at Nøgne Ø, Norway.
This imperial Oatmeal stout is brewed with one of the world’s most expensive coffees, made from droppings of weasel-like civetcats. The fussy Southeast Asian animals only eat the best and ripest coffee berries.Enzymes in their digestive system help to break down the bean. Workers collect the bean-containing droppings for Civet or Weasel Coffee. The exceedingly rare Civet Coffee has a strong taste and an even stronger aroma.
Ingredients : Water, malts, hops, yeast and Vietnamese ca phe chon coffee.

Black pour with a fairly large tan head. Aroma is roasted malt, coffee, alcohol, vanilla, cream, butterscotch, milk chocolate and a nice lurking hop aroma. Not surprisingly, flavor is big on coffee, but not bitter. It’s more like coffe with cream in it that was steeped with a hop sack. Vanilla, roasted malt, alcohol, and a light hop flavor in the finish. Well balanced. Great beer.

Dark dark brown, on the verge of black, with a sticky head that leaves copius lacing Smells like coffee, roasted barley, and toasty earthy notes. Very big and complex flavor. Rich in coffee, lots of chewy oats. Litterally, there were chunks of oats in the bottom of the bottle. The light carbonation breaks up the chewiness a little.

500ml bottle served in a snifter. This stout poured a solid black with a one-finger thick head of spongy tan foam. Pretty good retention and lacing. The aroma was all about the coffee. Big and bold heavily roasted coffee along with strong bittersweet chocolate. The flavor had fresh black coffee, milk chocolate, some caramel, and also a bit of charred malt. Powerful and roasty, but not overly bitter. The mouthfeel was full-bodied and velvety smooth. Basically an amped up version of Beer Geek Breakfast. Excellent coffee flavor. Nice beer.

Hands down one of the best beers I’ve tried in quite some time. The beer pours to a black body with a tall, lasting, lively, oatmeal looking really dark brown head. Nice lacing. The aroma can be smelled from afar. Rich coffee and sweet milk chocolate meets a nice sweet malt and oatmeal. The flavor is rich milk chocolate, oatmeal, and a really nicely flavored coffee. Never would have known the coffee came from excrement if they didn’t tell me. The flavors are really clean and balanced by a light hop. Bitterness is mild. Very nice mouthfeel from the oatmeal. Finishes rich and full bodied. Viscous but not sticky. This was a multi-hour beer drinking enjoyment.

Very dark brown, thick, lush tan head. Nose of coffee, oat, and minor chocolate and licorice, some pine. More bitter coffee in the flavor, some green hop notes, rather inky with some oat in the finish, slight dark chocolate and alcohol. Ultra smooth on the mouth. Not exceedingly complex, but the good, straight-forward coffee is a simplicity that I think a lot of Impys miss by barrel aging, hand-dip waxing... and the craft here is evident in the restraint. Time to revisit the regular geek breakfast.

Big thanks to Josh for this one. (what a great extra, right?) I got lots of coffee (of course) and a little bit of chocolate in both the aroma and the taste on this one. Compared to other coffee beers I’ve had though, this one finished a lot smoother. Often you get an almost astringent finish on coffee-brewed beers, but that was completely absent here. A really tasty beer. Too bad it’s made of weasel-poop.
