| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Oct 19, 2009 Bottle. So I finally get my hands on this fine bottle of sweet malty elixir. Pours almost black with a beautiful huge dark brown head. The aroma is intense and I could smell the waft of roasted goodness instantly once the bottle was cracked. I only slightly chilled this beer to really get the full potential of the aroma. Roasted coffee notes hit the nose straight up, with underlying notes of oats, chocolate, molasses and as it warmed further some brandied dark fruit coming through. To drink or not to drink was never the question. Delicious flavours of fresh roasted coffee bean, chocolate, oats, vanilla, dark fruit and hops. Wow! Silky smooth on the palate. The balance of the complete beer is pure craftsmanship. A superb finish to the beer as well, with more roasted coffee that lingers until way past breakfast the next morning. Amazing stuff. A classy Imperial Stout that will entice your senses. Mikkeller Rocks!!! Signing off...Mikkeller groupie #429. 0o9i (338), Reno, Nevada, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Oct 19, 2009 Bottle from City Beer. Pours like used motor oil to form a black, opaque body, the slightest hint of deep burgundy on one small edge. The head is very large for a RIS, foamy, brown, with a metallic sheen on top, but settles down to a small, creamy cover for the beer. Sticky goop on glass instead of lace. A strong aroma of musk, molasses, coffee, oats, with the oats giving an almost vanilla touch. A hint of dark fruits and alcohol notes. Fullish body with lots of lively carbonation, creamy, carbonated from start to finish. Slightly sticky. Big coffee flavor of musky coffee, rich, not heavily roasted, strong cherry flavor--very nice. Surrounding this lovely coffee flavor are lots of molasses with oats, semi-dark chocolate, fruitiness--raspberry cherry--pleasant alcohol notes. Finish is moderately bitter with chocolate in the forefront, pine and a touch of grapefruit rind, a touch of sugar, light cherry and coffee flavors carry through. Some acidity. chimplechamp (465), Oslo, Norway

| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Oct 15, 2009 Pours brown/black with a nice tan head that settles rather quickly. Nose has a heap of bitter roast coffee with slightly sour notes from the oats & coffee roast (not in a bad way!). Palate is highly carbonated like the breakfast which serves to dry out the already dry roasty palate, its quite full on with high carb & dry roast assaulting. Finish lingers with a slight touch of abv heat & bitter/sweet roast coffee. This is just a huge beer! Massive bitterness coming from the robust coffee resulting in an extremely robust brew. Totally over the top, certainly a coffee or beer enthusiasts beer, which i am. Could easy evolve with some cellaring. blankboy (3261), Toronto, Ontario, Canada
| 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Oct 14, 2009 Bottle [500ml] shared with garthicus at beerbistro. Pours black with a large frothy light-brown head and great lacing on the glass -- looks gorgeous! Aroma: Oh yeah! Roasted coffee, green hops, chocolate, some dark fruit, cream, vanilla and more. Flavour of roasted malt, coffee, chocolate, molasses, cream and more -- and somehow, the alcohol is totally hidden -- absolutely delicious! Creamy mouthfeel, medium to full bodied. Absolutely amazing! NobleSquirrel (1122), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Oct 13, 2009 Bottle from West Lakeview. Not sure how many batches of this have been around, but this is from the first shipment, bought about 6mths ago. Anyway, pours a very pretty black/brown with a dark head that sticks. The pour appears viscous. The nose is cool, loads of cocoa, char, cherries, currants. Don’t get a lot of coffee in the nose, more chocolate and berries than anything. The taste is quite different, sweet in the front and quality coffee in the finish, accompanied by an almost Grade A maple syrup flavor. Mouth feel is robust, carbonation is about right. This is a pretty spectacular IS and my first in quite some time. Delicious. Beaver (600), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Oct 11, 2009 16.9oz bottle. Pours an opaque black with a creamy tan head that retains well and laces the glass.
The aroma is sweet malts and oatmeal with some chocolate, black licorice and coffee and a little dark fruit and alcohol.
The flavor is sweet sugary lactic chocolate with some coffee. It has a big sharp roasted bitterness in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and a little watery.
Overall, very nice. I recall thinking the beer geek breakfast was a little better balanced and more enjoyable. zeke626 (307), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Oct 11, 2009 Bottle, pours an opaque, brown/black body with a brown, bubbly foam head. Aroma of burnt malts, cocoa, espresso, toffee, and licorice. Flavor is a nice balance of burnt/roasted malt, coffee, and dark chocolate. Smooth mouthfeel that isn’t quite as heavy on the body as I’d like for an imperial stout. The finish and aftertaste have elements of coffee and cocoa. The coffee notes are impressive throughout this one.
