| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Oct 1, 2009 16.9 oz bottle from Binnys (Orland Park, IL). Pours a pitchblack opaque pour, fairly thick, some midnight over ruby notes in the pour itself, a big dark brown brooding head that laces well, sticks around in a pretty big amount. Aromas are a good bittering hop, roasted bitter coffee, dark chocolate with a touch of sweetness mixing between well roasted malts, a bit of caramel, darker coffee, a light sweetness underneath but a coffee and hop bomb it appears. Initial is thick, giving a full mouthfeel, immediately roasted coffee, bitter hops, roasted malts, dark bitter chocolate, dryness, oat and cereal malts well roasted, some caramel sweetness underneath. The coffee on this beer is dominant, good roast with hoppy bitterness taking precedent, providing a nice strike on the palate, and covering up much of the sweetness is this almost 11% ABV monster. A bit boozy in the finish, warming but also leaving a lingering bitterness then roast a bit behind. A good mesh of flavors, a little stronger on the coffee than it’s base styled companion. A little char/smoke/ash on the backend further in. I liked this but I think Iiked the base just a bit more as this one ends up a little overdone for me. Cheers. | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Sep 28, 2009 My Bottom Line:
Green hops and roasted cereals provide potent flavors and bitterness, somewhat alleviated by effervescent carbonation and coffee-laced oatmeal notes.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A layer of beige foam tops the blackness.
-The hoppy intensity is not necessary for this beer imho, making it stray from dessert territory.
-Alcohol heat and makes the already intense flavor profile even more brash.
-The bitterness yields some tartness in the end.
-Dextrins are well levelled.
-The hop signature is quite coniferous.
-I admit this is not what I expected to be for such a highly-rated an Imperial Stout. It’s complex and very flavorful, but it’s so intense it can be a chore at times.

| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Sep 27, 2009 Large size, dark tan head on a black body. Coffee is strong in both aroma and taste, a fairly solid bitterness without being to overpowering, oatmeal gives good body and the alcohol is only just facewarming. Well made, extremely drinkable and probably more than just facewarming after a second or third beer. thedm (3836), Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Sep 26, 2009 This bottled brew from a rating party poured a large sized head of frothy fine to medium sized dark brown colored bubbles that were and left behind a and a good lacing. The mild aroma was dark malt. The mouth feel was tingly at the start and strongly tingly at the finish. The flavor contained notes of roasted malt and potent vinous dark malt. Delicious and one I would certainly like to have again. ksurkin (405), Norfolk, Virginia, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Sep 25, 2009 500ml bottle from CBX to celebrate submitting my ERAS application! pours a syrupy, jet black topped by a massive, rocky, dark mocha head with great retention and lacing. aroma is wonderful with huge, roast coffee beans, dark chocolate, toasted almond, and touches of sweet toffee and ash. flavor is outstanding with massive, roasted espresso, dark chocolate, rolled oats, and caramel malts with hints of dark fruit, lactic sugar, smoke, and mild, earthy hops leaving a lingering, bitter, coffee finish. palate is full bodied and a bit highly carbonated for an imperial stout with just a hint of booze. overall, a bit of a letdown as enjoyed beer geek breakfast a bit more, but still an excellent brew...even though it’s made with with civet shit, haha. planky84 (137), , Greater London, England

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Sep 20, 2009 bottle - Pours black with a very brown head. The aroma is of coffee and dark roast malt with some chocolate. It has a very intense roast malt flavor with lots of coffee and some dark, bitter chocolate. Moderately bitter, it has a full body and a dry finish. The coffee really dominates this one. It’s really good though not as spectacular as I had hoped. I’ve had my civet shiat coffee beer now though.
