Anyway, it tasted far better than the smell but had an unpleasant alcohol bite coupled with some sweetness at around the 2/3rds mark. fata2683 (881), Panama City, Florida, USA
| 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Sep 6, 2009 bottle thanks to z13 and beastiefan, pours a thick motor oil black with one of the darkest brown heads I have ever seen, laces all the way to the end. Aroma is full of coffee, beans, grinds, and fresh brewed, there are also notes of oats and grain, like porridge. Needless to say it’s very rich and inviting in the nose. This beer is very cloying at first. The full body is so rich with tons of roasted malt, some chocolate malt, and a black patent flavor that lead into the coffee. This beer just packs a punch with some of the best coffee notes I have tasted in beer. It’s between a dark roast and expresso in flavor, but is joined by a lightly sweet milk chocolate to balance the bitterness. The mouth is silky smooth most likely from the oats, wtih a thin layer of carbonation apparent in the finish. There is also a nice bitter coffee that is very strong and lingers in the finish. The alcohol is tucked out of sight until the beer is almost at room temp. I have to say, I’m blown away. garmonbozia (229), Hattiesburg, Mississippi, USA

Deep, oily black - nose is burnt caramel and deep roasted coffee, a little alcohol heat. Flavor is sweet upfront - mollasses and toffee, with the coffee making a full-on assault @ the finish. As it warms, the booze is very evident. Really nice brew, but not as complex/well-married flavors as it could be. kiefdog (1605), Tampa, Florida, USA

Appearance: Pitch black, with a nice brown head, lots of lacing. Aroma: Vanilla, hops, malt, peat/turf, lots of coffee, milk, cream and leather delicious. Flavour: Coffee/espresso, mocha cream, like warm ice cream! So much coffee, so much smoothness, this is an imperial stout at its best. raindog (558), Evansville, Indiana, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 31, 2009 Updated: Oct 11, 2009Room Temp: Black pour, brown edges. Dark, brown head,is large and fizzy at first and settles to a small ring.Pungent aroma of medicinal alcohol, roasted grain, milk chocolate, toffee, and underlying acidic coffee. Fizzy, oily, texture. Quite thick body. Bitter and highly, roasty upfront. Quite sticky and sweet as well. In the back is more roasty flavors and little dark fruit and chocolate. Finish is not overdone on the coffee but the coffee that is there is strong. Earthy, hops also lend to the bitter, but tasteful finish. The more this opens up the more the sweet and roasty flavors exceed the alcohol and bitterness, although the alcohol in the aroma is still distracting. Also, upon opening the hops and coffee in the finish really start to blend perfectly. This would be a horrible beer to start off drinking cold as it get’s better the longer it sets and I started it at room temp. Some big distraction with the major alcohol in the aroma, but really tasty and balanced after it has had time to breathe and open up. Glad I waited this long for the coffee to subside a bit, although it doesn’t have quite the ashy character notable in other coffee stouts.
