A dark robe with a frail, receding tan head and plenty of sediment left at the bottom of the bottle. Prunes and espresso-like notes, nice and oily, waft gently from the glass. A warm, rather inviting shot of ethanol emerges with warming and breathing. Surprisingly, there is almost no noticeable banana or cotton candy to the nose, which is impressive, being from a young bottle. In the mouth, the pruniness and bittersweet roast notes lend momentum to the emerging roll of sweet, milk chocolate-like maltiness and obvious alcohol warmth on the finish. The residual sugars are very persistent (and in my mind, too excessive) and lightly fatigue the palate in to tasting only this dominant flavor, over the course of the beer (three of us split the bottle). Interesting notes of fudge, sweet almond and oily, bittersweet coffee beans, and I can’t admit to being terribly offended by the alcohol appearance, being quite light for this young and high abv of a beer. Good stuff, hopefully some more complexity will develop with age.

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Nov 29, 2009 Big foamy brown headthat settles to a thin lid. Colour is black as a winters night. Aroma is full of coffee, chocolate, spices and is heavily roasted and warming. It is a bit thinner than expected though. Flavour is full of coffee, alcohol, dark chocolate and brown sugar and also some spices. It is rather acidic too and to be honest I find it to make the flavour a bit unbalanced. Mouthfeel is rather smooth, but the carbonation is actually a bit too strong. This beer is very good, no question about it, my expectations were so high that it still is a bit of a disappointment to me, every time I open a Mikkeller brew I expect perfection and this one is a little short of that.
