pilsnerrogge (1770), Finspång, Sweden Sep 30, 2008 Bottled: Pours black, no head. Salty liquorice, chocolate and coffee on the nose. Rich mouth-feel. Flavour is roasted liquorice that somehow is sweet and salty at the same time. Very good and quite intense. dmac (1420), Toms River, New Jersey, USA Sep 28, 2008 12.7 oz bottle from ucusty thanks David. Pours a deep dark solid black with an average size tightly packed creamy beige head in my Lucifer snifter. Initial aroma is very sweet, dark fruits..chocolates..dates..artificial sweetner, then the roastiness kicks in with lots of espresso beans..burnt coffee, yum. Full bodied with average carbonation and a god dose of alcohol warming. If the alcohol warming was a touch less this would of been a 5 on palate but alas it was just a bit to much. Flavor of sweet dark fruits, lots of coffee, alcohol, even a touch of peat and smoke from all the raosted/burnt maltiness. Really great beer which turned my mouth into a black hole as I tried to suck every last drop out of the bottle. blankboy (3165), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Sep 25, 2008 My 2600th rating! Bottle (12.7oz). Man oh man, the cork was a bitch to get out! Pours totally black with an average size somewhat-lasting frothy tan head -- that’s a pretty good looking beer. Nice aroma of deep roasted malt, molasses, dark fruit, dark chocolate and a significant amount of alcohol. Minus a point for some kind of mild oddness to the aroma, like a weird burnt sugar quality to it or something I can’t place. Probably the alcohol. Flavour starts quite tasty: Dry, roasty and bitter along with molasses, dark fruit and chocolate, but there’s too much alcohol in the finish making it somewhat hard to drink, again I have to take a point off. Syrupy mouthfeel, medium to full bodied. It’s definitely an "experience" to drink this, and it is pretty good, but I have to say, I thought I would like this more then I did. It’s just too damn boozy when you get down to it. Still, 3.8 is nothing to scoff at. AmEricanbrew (1747), Louisiana, USA Sep 19, 2008 Pitch black with little head. Boozy sweet mocha aroma with sugar, eaweed, and blackened malts. Medium body. Good flavors of strong espresso with a lump of sugar. Finishes with a black malt dryness. The alcohol stayed out of the way here for the most part. Bullit (1300), Glasgow, Scotland Sep 13, 2008 Bottle, courtesy of skortila. Black colour, tan head. Aroma has cognac, bourbon, cherries and red fruits. Flavour of dark dried fruits, port liquor, alcohol and roasted malts. Miver (551), WillowStreet, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 11, 2008 70cl Bottle. Poured deep opaque black with a medium sized tan head. Aroma of roasted chocolate malt and coffee. Tastes of roasted coffee, chocolate malts, bakers chocolate bittering, and light caramel. Thick body and mouth feel. Alcohol hidden very well. Very nice. bhensonb (4187), Woodland, California, USA Sep 8, 2008 Bottle from Marcus, corked and caged. Thanks Dave. Pours black with a decent dark tan head. Aromas of tar, anise, dark fruits, dark toasted malt, coffee and arguably cacao. Full bodied with soft and creamy carbonation. There’s a bit of heat. There’s a hint of tar. There’s a lot of dark malt sweet, but there’s balancing bitter from something. Could be overtoasted malts. The alcohol tends to be ever present. Finish is not all that sweet. Definitely a sipper. Very enjoyable in the mouth. Madsnp (611), Odense C, Denmark Sep 8, 2008 Bottle. Dark brown with a small tan lacing head. Aromas of licorice, dark chocolate, coffee, dried plum and caramel. Flavour is roasted with heavy coffee notes, vinous alcohol, bitter chocolate, dried fruits and sweet malt.
