Ethereal (1500), London, Greater London, England Jul 2, 2008 New batch bottle at Chris O’s 19th April 2008 tasting. Pours black with a line of beige head. Exquisite aroma of cloves, eucalyptus, rosemary, coffee and more. The flavour is similar yet more intense - it really is harsh on the tongue. It’s slick and escapes the mouth leaving the herb flavours in the corners of your mouth. Interesting stuff. Blom (390), Odense, Denmark Jun 25, 2008 Black with a brown head. The aroma is aggressive with strong notes of coffee, dark chocolate, vanilla, cherry, oak, rum, coughing sirup, dark dried fruits, alcohol and tobacco. It carries its high ABV very well in the flavours. They begin sweet and go into a warming alcohol presence combined with a complex bitterness. In the end however you begin to feel like something torn out of Kubirck’s 2001 - at least if youre not sharing the bottle. And on this very night I was making a hop odessey on my own. SuperDave70 (1157), Beautiful Sunny Mesa, Arizona, USA Jun 24, 2008 Dark black pour with a small creamy tan head. Lots of coffee in the aroma and flavor. Actually coffee seems to dominate this one. Also hints of cocoa, dark fruit, spice, and molasses. Creamy in the mouth. Alcohol is very well hidden. Seriously smooth and drinkable. BeerFanDan17 (610), Land O Lakes, Florida, USA Jun 21, 2008 Shared with sebletitje. Extremely good stout. Pouts pitch black like a Dark Lord with flavors of mollases, roasted coffee, and a light hint of cocoa. Rich and smooth. sebletitje (1880), Tampa, Florida, USA Jun 19, 2008 Pours pitch black, no head. This beer got better after a few sips. It starts of with a smell of soy sauce that leaves you wondering where the coffee might be. It does get a lot better after a few sips when the maltiness and the aroma of coffee/mocha sets in. Could hardly notice it was a 14% beer. A complex and interesting beer to say the least. mjs (1446), Helsinki, Finland Jun 18, 2008 Updated: Jul 22, 2008(Bottle, BBE 14/08/11) Pitch black. Small brown head which disappeared quickly. Vanilla, coffee and roasted malts in nose.
Slight carbonation in dryi palate. Taste: acidy red wine, coffee, roasted malts, alcohol. Some vanilla. Bitter aftertaste. (I am suspecting that there was something wrong with the bottle I drunk.) (My rating was 3.5)
Re-rate on 2008-07-22:
Now, the acidiness is not there, so this bottle must be in better condition. Dark chocolate, roasted malts, bitterness and alchol form majority of the taste. Some vanilla and coffee, too. Quite balanced taste.
Pitch black with a small, beige head.
Slightly salty with a lot of coffee and chocolate and some dry cocoa.
