DocHop (278), Baltimore, Maryland, USA Mar 30, 2008 Pours a very dark brown with a short but full light brown head. Aroma of sweet, lightly roasted caramel malts and black pepper mixed with coffee. Also some hop aroma. Taste is incredibly unique for a stout. Very sweet and almost fruity at first with a finish full of that black pepper/coffee flavor along with alcohol. The body is very creamy and hints at chocolate. Very complex flavor palate. wunderbier (1264), Tampere, Finland Mar 30, 2008 Ruby to black hue without a proper head. Big depth of colour though. Stronge aroma of coffee, prunes, chocolate and rum raisin cake. A barrage of espresso, alcohol, rye porridge, black currents, leather, vanilla, liquorice and oak all come together to create a stunning impression of a Zinfandel. Rosemary, perhaps even more forcefully some sappy pine, rounds out the experience. Solid sweetness throughout with moderate roast. Fairly nimble on the tongue -- especially considering the % -- with some warming alcohol. Very red wine like; fruit blows up in the flavour eventually with coffee and chocolate taking to the back for a while. Medium to heavy body with a silky texture and soft carbonation. And I had just been wondering what a beer would be like if brewed to be more like a wine...
37.5cl bottle, bbe 14/08/11, thanks Jukkabro. cgarvieuk (4159), Edinburgh, Scotland Mar 30, 2008 Bottle at Toms Glasgow tasting 2 ... Deep black ... hops and coffee in nose ... sweet malts ... lots of roast ... quite a bit of caramel and toffee ... some wooody tones ... and more coffee. garthicus (1215), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Mar 29, 2008 Thanks Hogtownharry, shared with Harry too. Thick black pour, brown medium head which reduces quickly but is easily agitated back to glory. Coffee - baileys aroma. Coffee-toffee-christmas pudding flavour - raisens, cherry and a large alcohol finish - PHEW! A big beer indeed, thanks for sharing Harry. maniac (2628), Richmond, Virginia, USA Mar 29, 2008 Updated: Jan 16, 2009Bottle on 11/30/2008 at the 3rd Annual Richmond Industry Gathering. Dark black body with ruby highlights. Big roast, molassas and hop aroma with lots of coffee. Coffee flavor with light roast and hops. Medium full body with moderately low carbonation. 8/5/9/4/17 - 4.3
03/29/2008: Richmond Industry Gathering 2007. Dark black body with a light brown head. Heavy bitter aroma with some caramel and chocolate. Heavy malty flavor, strong bitter, chocolate and molassas. 8/5/9/4/18 - 4.4 HogTownHarry (3922), Toronto (Harbourfront), Ontario, Canada Mar 29, 2008 Bottle (375ml - green, corked & caged). Shared with garthicus, my bottle. Thick opaque black pour, minimal head. Deep dry roast aroma, near-burnt, molasses and alcohol, very herbal. Taste - even more bitter, burnt cookies, dry bitterness, quite boozy at it warms, figs and long-steeped raisins, coffee grounds and nutshell bitterness. Thick, syrupy body, deeply roasty mouthfeel, astringent and increasingly boozy - lovely, really - wouldn’t drink it regularly, pretty "big." thomat (666), Göteborg, Sweden Mar 29, 2008 Very dark brown, almost black with a small off-white head. Roasted with coffe tones. Malty with coffe and chocolate aromas and a hint of vanilla.
Full bodied with a long, well balanced, bitter aftertaste. Pinball (2692), Allerød, Denmark Mar 28, 2008 Bottle, 375cl, from Skjold Burne Vinhandel, allerød, denmark.
i expeced something bad from the 13.something alc, but this imperial stout is truly well crafted. One of te best beers i’ve tasted, and also one of the best stouts i’ve tasted. I’m going to go buy more of these asap - they might not last forever. chocolate, coffee, alc. and other notes are well balanced, well rounded. i’d take one of these instead of the #1 ranked beer here any day. If you like stout, you HAVE to try this one.
