DMRz (218), Durham, North Carolina, USA Dec 30, 2007 Brown almost black pour with tan head. Sweet coffee aroma with a hint of hops. The flavor is intense yet amazingly smooth, with coffee, pine, and a hint of dark chocolate. The finish, while smooth, is more bitter and hoppy than I would have liked in am imperial stout. I am left a bit disappointed by this, especially when compared to other impy stouts with such a high rating. Nuffield (2718), Roseville, Minnesota, USA Dec 29, 2007 Very black color, great dark head. There’s a hoppy atmosphere around this black hole and I really didn’t get the kind of coffee that I’ve had in other top examples of the genre--that’s too bad. Thick, hints of smoke, like sitting next to a fireplace. Some bitter notes in the end. sbroome (69), Burnsville, Minnesota, USA Dec 29, 2007 Mikkeleler’s ’Black Hole’ - whoa.
Look - Pours like the black plague... dark, dark, dark.
Smells - like a coffee shop in Heaven, perhaps a coffee-flavored champagne.
Mouth feel - Nice and clean, smooth.
Taste - Nice and coffeeish, caramel and oaky notes; heavy in alcohol.
A definate must-try for fans of coffee-flavored beers. Too many of these will leave your broke and saying things you shouldn’t.

13.1% ABV Sammy (3934), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Dec 29, 2007 $12 from Premiere Gourmet, then about $1.25 in duties. An expresso coffee experience. Thickly expresso in mouthfeel and in aroma. Pours black. I wasn’t buzzed from caffeine, it was a fine experience, it is a rich coffee experience. Bittersweet finish and aftertaste. douglas88 (1556), Salt Lake City, Utah, USA Dec 29, 2007 Updated: Jan 12, 2008Bottle thanks to shp555. Pours a deep jet black with a nice creamy light brown head. The aroma is amazing; floral hops and burnt coffee. The taste really starts out hoppy with some hints of coffee and dark fruit. There is no notice of the ABV at all. As it warms the hops fade and coffee, dark fruit, molasses, and brown sugar come to the fore. A great beer. RollinHard (748), Fort Worth, Texas, USA Dec 28, 2007 Updated: Jan 14, 2008Newer 07 batch. Pours black with a good sized but short lived (for the most part) brown head. Really unusual aroma, incredibly piny for an imperial stout, but not balanced like 3F Black Sun stout. Lots of hops (pine, earth, wood), a little tiny bit of roast and coffee, dark chocolate, butter, and a big dose of vodka. Flavor is a little more malty with some dark chocolate, coffee, lots more vodka-like heat, and a ton of piny herbal hop flavor. Malt flavors are very downplayed compared to hop flavor and alcohol. Finishes bitter and hoppy, more of a roasted nut flavor, a unique gentle coffee taste, and of course an assload of heat. High carbonated, a little thin. How can a beer seem so strong in flavor yet have as a little a malt presence as this does? Well, that’s because I just don’t like it. I had batch 3 Mephistopheles the other night and felt that was infinitely more enjoyable. jsh12bama (335), Alabama, USA Dec 28, 2007 Pours black with creamy tan head. Aroma of berries and hops. Taste is a smack in the face hop bite with berries and dark fruits. Also flavor of bitter coffee. Expected it to not live up to the hype, but it surpassed my expectations. Awesome beer!! wickedpete (625), Lexington Park, Maryland, USA Dec 27, 2007 Updated: May 18, 2008Black body with a tall creamy tan head. Aroma is sweet, warm sugary, tar, and floral hops. The flavor is bitter chocolaty and dry but with an almost medicinal alcohol character at first, but that wanes. Sweet overall with a light body.
