Good solid beer. mhelgason (495), Charlotte, North Carolina, USA Dec 27, 2007 bottle. small brown mostly dissapating fizzy head into black body with sparkling present on all sides but not in a moving pattern just chillin on the glass. powerful aromas of strong coffee and chocolate, some unusual spices were present (but unsure what they were), also hops, malts, and some vinousness present in aroma. flavor is moderately sweet with some light bitterness. alcohol is noticed in the warming only. mouthfeel is thick. actually not as big as was expecting but still an awesome brew. Miksu (2187), Jyväskylä, Finland Dec 27, 2007 0.5 l bottle, Proefbrouwerij version. Pitch black with small tan head. Sweetish, vinous and burnt aroma with notes of sharp and solvent alcohols, berries, coffee and licorice. Heavy roasty and bitter flavor with medical and vinous notes, coffee, dark fruits and sharp alcohols. Very long bitter and roasty finish. Over the top flavor bomb, only for slow sipping. brewblackhole (1367), Muskego, Wisconsin, USA Dec 25, 2007 Lively cola, malt aroma with touches of coffee and chocolate liquer alcohol. Complex malts taste ,bakers chocolate a tart fruitness, and a cold coffee bitterness that seems like it is derived from the alcohol, the wonderful Mikkeller smoothness on the palate, very subtley complex, not big bodied, the alcohol got a little harsh towards the finish. Probaly will smooth out with age. Nice stout, price a little high MikeF (528), Cleveland, Ohio, USA Dec 24, 2007 wonderful fresh hoppy, roasty, slight coffee, and chocolaty aroma. Very rich and velvety. Sweet and very roasty up front. Moving on to a robust bitterness that is interestingly balanced by a tart and sourness. Unique. Worth every penny. I have been sucked in... greenhorn1 (458), Mission Viejo, California, USA Dec 23, 2007 Bottle from BottleTrek.com. Pours like oil with a brown frothy head that dissipates into a few wishpy clouds. Big aroma of coffee and bitter chocolate. Flavor is similiar with addition of roasted malts and even some citrus notes in the back. Smooth, almost velvet like, mouthfeel. You can hardly detect the alcohol, but it does sneak up quickly. This is a copmlex brew and will be even better with age. NicerInPerson (337), North of Raleigh, North Carolina, USA Dec 23, 2007 The aroma was strong coffee and woodsy, earthy, grassy and minty hops when first poured. Roasted grains and espresso coffee were notable along with a caramel presence. The beer poured into the glass pitch black with a very slight ruby highlight when held to light. The head was brown, tight bubbled, tall and frothy with a lasting presence which laced the glass. The flavor was nicely malty with caramel and chocolate coupled to a nice roasted barley character of espresso coffee. The grassiness of the aroma carried over into the flavor and the caramel moved forward out of the background. The flavor was also lightly minty and the bitterness was well done in conjunction with the malt. The finish was dry with lasting grassy hop flavor and chocolate/coffee into the aftertaste. The body was just below full and despite a fairly low level of carbonation the beer was creamy on the palate. The alcohol was restrained despite being substantial and really only showed its cards in the warming that occurred post consumption. A very nice RIS! 12.7 ounce corked and bailed bottle. franksnbeans (265), Columbus, Maryland, USA Dec 23, 2007 Pours a pitch black motor oil with a chocolate head that is sticky and lacy. Smells like chocolate covered fruit with some expresso. Taste is hot, lots of chocolate, dark fruit and a bitter hop finish. Thick in the mouth with a nice smooth finish. A sipper and needs some age. This has a bite that will tame with a year and generous flavors that need some time to mingle.
