PhillyHomeBrew (176), Forest Hills, New York, USA Dec 13, 2007 Very dark body with very little head. There is a ton of nutty, roasted malt aroma along with a lot of spice- mostly anise. There is a lot less alcohol flavor than I expected. There is a lot more burnt caramel, chocolate, coffee, and molasses flavors. The flavor coats the palate and stays for a while. BeerandBlues2 (3201), Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA Dec 13, 2007 Bottle purchased at Liquor Max in Loveland, CO. Pours opaque with an average, creamy, dark brown head, somewhat diminishing with good lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (molasses, coffee), heavy hops (flowers, pine, grapefruit), average yeast (leather) with notes of tar and heavy alcohol. Full bodied, creamy and alcoholic texture, lively carbonation, and a bitter finish. Long duration, light sweetness, heavy acidity, and harsh bitterness; fusel alcohol burn with a burnt toast flavor under the hops. Guerde (693), Welcome, Minnesota, USA Dec 13, 2007 (bottle at Cellars tasting) Pours black with a tan head. Strong initial aroma of a green bell pepper, which was really odd. Once the beer warmed, more roasted notes came through, with some licorice and coffee. Taste was an ample amount of coffee, light chocolate, and quite a bit of licorice and a thick mouthfeel. elmatador00 (518), j-action-ville, North Carolina, USA Dec 12, 2007 Pours a pitch black color with a reddish tan head. Has heavy hints of chocolate and roasted malts. Hints of chocolate and cherries on the back end. Finishes heavy bodied with a refreshing alcohol burn on the throat. Great brew. MatchesForHire (25), Westborough, Massachusetts, USA Dec 12, 2007 2007, 12-oz bottle. Hoo boy. This beer was a hot, hoppy mess. But a good mess. The aroma reeked of booze, so much so that I refrained from standing around open flame for an hour or so after tasting it for fear my breath would catch fire. Sure, 14% isn’t all that bad when compared to some of the more extreme beers out there (I’m looking at you, Raison d’Extra), but this is an extraordinarily unrefined 14%. In two years this beer will be phenominal with the dark molasses-chocolate-caramel-maltiness mellowing out and eating up a bit of the heat, but for now it’s just not drinkable in any of practical sense of the word. I’ll come back in a couple of years and tell you all how it turned out. aubreya (676), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA Dec 12, 2007 The color was a deep black. The head was dark tan, thin, and creamy. The aroma was molasses, alcohol, sweet malt, and chocolate. The flavor was molasses, chocolate, alcohol, and hops at the very end. The palate was smooth. The finish was warm, hoppy, and long-lasting. emacgee (1859), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA Dec 12, 2007 Updated: Feb 14, 2008Pours a very nice dark black with a thin creamy brown head. The nose is very nice, chocolate cherries, molasses, alcohol, coffee, sweet, . The flavor was warm dry alcohol, sweet, chocolate, espresso on the sides of the tongue, and there are the hops, waxy warm and bitter on the back of the tongue. Crisp dry palate with the alcohol showing mostly as warmth in the stomach. Not as phenomenal as I had expected but still good. Skeegle (476), Maryland, USA Dec 12, 2007 Updated: Dec 10, 2008Cherries and dark chocolate in the nose. Alcoholic sugary grapefruits too, like sugary hop oil. Mmmmm. Thin with heavy alcohol present in the mouth feel. Coffee as you swallow. Pitch black with a thin brown head. Very wet finish, and tons of burnt fruits with some black kindling tastes. I was blown away by this flavor miasma. A good one for sure, one of my favorites.
