Aroma is chocolate, roasted malt, coffee and some faint hints of dark dried fruits. Flavor hits with more coffee than I would have expected and has plenty of chocolate. This is a stellar beer. Glad I have another to savor. larsga (2969), Oslo, Norway
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Apr 25, 2008 Hardly any head, just a thin deep dark brown film. Intense deep black chocolate aroma with pine and mint notes. Intense massive chocolate mint and pine taste with coffee notes. An overpowering and uncompromising onslaught of black taste. In fact, I need water after 2 sips. Quite a bit of alcohol heat. Vaguely citric burnt notes and used coffee beans. Very unusual, very intense, and hard to drink. Interesting, though. | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Nov 10, 2007 i feel fortunate for the chance to try this and I appreciate Brewfiend sharing. It is a very good coffee imperial stout, though perhaps not Peche Mortel-good. Loads of coffee in the aroma and flavor. A thick, viscous beer with low carbonation. Lots of malt and light spice I can’t identify. The hops are very light. A skillfully made beer and I am surprised to see the alcohol is so high because I didn’t pick up any alcohol in the aroma or flavor. ante (2955), Stockholm, Sweden
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Sep 5, 2006 Bottled. Very cool "label"... pours out like used motoroil with low dark brown head. Complex and strong aroma of black chocolate, pines, honey, pepper, alcohol, muscavado sugar, whipped cream and burnt chocolate pudding. Really thick flavour of black chocoalte, arabica coffee with notes of piney and lemony hops, hot pepper, chocolate cream, nutmeg and honey. Really, really thick mouthfeel with a long finish of piney hops, black chocolate and salt. Extreme and really tasty. One of the most thickest beers I*ve sampled. Brilliamt stuff. bb (2930), Martinez, California, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Mar 20, 2008 Bottle. Black beer with a brown head. Malty, chocolate, coffee aroma with backing hops. Rich dark malt flavor with backing coffee and balancing hops. A bit of chocolate showing. Nothing overpowering - great balance with bitterness in background. Lingering malt, coffee, bitter hops. Good beer. beerbuzzmontreal (2911), Montreal, Quebec, Canada
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 20, 2008 The color is black as night, or dare I say, a black hole, there’s a thin brown head that has good retention. As I put the glass under my nose, I sensed vanilla and rich chocolate, there’s also a big roasted malt presence underneath. The flavor has a decadent opulence of roasted malt with chocolate and vanilla along for the ride, the alcohol warms the mouth a bit, but it’s not too present, there’s bitterness in the end. The body is near medium with a vinous texture and gentle carbonation. This imperial stout is a very nice sipper on a cold, november evening. skortila (2905), Bunnik, Netherlands
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | Nov 19, 2006 Bottled, UDRBG. Rating #1600. Bottle number 69. Aroma of moccha, black currant, cherry and licorice. It’s appearance is pure machine oil. There is no head. taste is sweet and salty. Chocolate, licorice, coffee bitter finish. Cinnamon/ ’speculaas’, vanilla. Quite sticky. It’s a very dense brew and this is actually concentrated stout juice. I think you should add some water and then you have a few bottles of ’normal’ stout. The beer is an endless source of flavours. Mostly you just need a few decent ingredients to make a good brew. Adding too much mostly won’t do the beer any good. This beer is an example of adding a load of different things and it still is a very good brew. It’s a pitty this is an exclusive beer. They should brew more of this. Why limit good brews? BMan1113VR (2894), Los Angeles (and Dallas), Texas, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 7, 2008 Bottle thanks to my amazing girlfriend! Bottle labeled at 13.1% abv. Pours with a small, quickly vanishing light brown head. Black body. Good lacing with alcohol legs as well. Aroma of alcohol, chocolate, a bit flowery, with molassas, wet cedar, some tar and liccorice. Taste is a bit of a dissapointment compaired to the smell. Yeasty, some alcohol, chocolate, but not much complexity at all. A bit warming, but not to bad consider the ABV. Syrupy with light carbonation.
