Commercial Description:
Finally……! Black Hole is what Mikkeller is all about. Daring, vulgar and extreme. From the very beginning Mikkellers goal has been to push the limit and with this warming, intense imperial stout, a new chapter in the Danish beer history has been written. The high bitterness from the hops and the sweetness from the malt and alcohol, creates a good balance which makes Black Hole an explosion of nuances, but also leaves a feeling of a perfect and complex beer – in the heavyweight category.

Courtesy TheCheeseMan. Thanks Dan! The pour is a deep, melted dark chocolate color that appears black at first glance. A foamy tan head settles slowly to a swirly, thin film with a prominent edge. Random spots of lacing dot the glass. Upon the first whiff, an avalanche of coffee and baker’s chocolate explode into the nasal passages. This monster is as roasty as it gets. Dark fruits are present in the background, but they get slapped around by the intensely strong coffee and chocolate. Moving to the flavor, things get a bit more complex, yet the intensity does not subside. Again, freshly crushed Columbian coffee beans and bitter, biting chocolate take top billing. Upon further inspection, however, caramel, nougat, and vanilla force their way through the roast. The only major flaw this beer displays, and it is forgivable given its age, is a rather intense, vodka-esque heat. This beer practically sears the throat on the way down. The mouthfeel is big, full, and smooth. To sum everything up into one word, this beer is ROASTY! It’s like Peche Mortel or Beer Geek Breakfast on steroids, though its held back a bit by its intensity and lack of balance. Still, this is clearly an excellent beer that will no doubt be world-class once its few flaws have been aged away.

375ml bottle, 2007 vintage brewed at De Proefbrouwerij. thanks to sunevdj for the bottle. pours black with a tan head around the rim. nose is extremely roasty with some vanilla, coffee, and a big piney hop presence. flavor is extremely roasty with piney hops, some vanilla, molasses, and a woody character to it. wow you can’t taste the alcohol at all. the hops and intense roastiness in this really reminds me of Ten Fidy. I think it’s great now but I could see increasing this rating for an aged bottle. easily the best Mikkeller beer i’ve had yet.

375 ml "champagne" bottle, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 13.1%. The beer is pitch black, impenetrable for light (hence the name). Nice brown head. Intense aroma of malts, alcohol, coffee, burnt sugar and vanilla. The flavour is intense and overwhelming: an aggressive malty sweetness, backed up by honey and dark sugars, with distinct notes of roasted barley (but not quite as extreme in that respect as I expected ), the coffee is distinct, and the vanilla is also noticeable. Distinct hoppy bitterness in the finish. Warming mouthfeel. This is a "sipping beer", to be savoured slowly - definitely not a "refreshment beer". Not for the squeamish or faint hearted.

Bottle 52/100: Pour is dark viscous viscous black with a dense and small brown head...smell is rich and so intensely roasty, like being in a coffee shop when roasting...some notes of oak and cocoa...flavor is strongly sweet at first with a strong warmth from alcohol coming on...then the alcohol is killed off by more roasty bitterness...nicely done!

Dark, almost totally black. Has a dark, lasting head. Aroma is deep, heavy, chocolate, coffee, esters. Perhaps a bit too heavy. Flavor is heavy sweet, bitter finish, complex. Fully body.
