Dark roasted malts, coffee, chocolate, but a little too much alcohol. Flavor was decent, but a little bitter and unpleasent. GonZoBeeR (2163), ste-Eulalie, Quebec, Canada

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Dec 26, 2009 Bottle shared by badnewsbeers. Opaque deep brown/black body with reddish highlights at the edges, thin, clumping buff head. Potent, complex nose of raisins, plum, molasses and soy, vinous, with chocolate and subdued roast and hints of sherry-like oxidation. Very sweet body with abundant plum and raisins, soy, and sherry, which quickly dissipates to a thin, almost metallic finish. I was surprised by how quickly the malt heft vaporized, which reminded me of the way cheap bubble gum offers a quick hit of tasty sugars before becoming flavorless and unpleasant to chew. This beer needed more hops, more roast, or something else to give the body more "oomph" and depth. Disappointing. NYHarvey (2154), New York, New York, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Jan 26, 2007 Courtesy of Papsoe. The aroma has burnt molasses, brown sugar, grahm cracker, dark chocolate, coffee and malt in an insanely high concentration. It pours a high viscosity black color and the head, which is a very dark mocha brown, fades fairly rapidly, but retains some semblance of an actual head. It is almost menacing looking it is so dark.
<P>
The first sip is dark chocolate mixed with pan-seared grahm cracker, cocoa powder, brown sugar, molasses, blueberry skins, rum soaked cherries and lots of boozy notes. In retrospect this would have benefited from another year in the bottle, but it is amazing right now and I owed it to Boboski to share it for opening something super rare with me. Great stuff. They should definitely brew it again. jsquire (2123), St. Marys, Ohio, USA

I don’t know where this bottle came from, but I was thrilled to see and it did live up to all the hype. Interesting packaging too. Dark beer with ruby highlights when held up to the light. Thin brown whispy foam that created a galaxy on the surface of the beer. Fascinating nose with many layers, including licorice, dusty chocolate, coffee and many other complimentary notes. Flavors started with the coffee and chocolate, with smoke, ash, alcohol, strong grassy hops and vanilla. Oily, coating mouthfeel. The finish is dry coffee bean bitterness. This is a really excellent beer. bager (2121), Copenhagen N, Denmark

Roasted malts and strong notes of dark dried fruits chocolate and coffe. Hints of vanilla and maybe some sort of sherry. OleR (2110), Oslo, Norway

High aroma level, roasted dark malts, licorice, tar and dark dried fruits. A faint whiff of alcohol . Taste is vinous, rich malty, sweet and roasted with a nice chocolate accent. Coffee, vanilla and citrus notes. Surprisingly moderate hopbitterness. Full-bodied. Thick, warming mouthfeel. Burned malts and bitterness lingers in the finish. Great stuff.
