No head. Harsh, burnt and wrong malty flavors..almost chemical. Roasty notes start coming through strong too along with some dirty dish water type flavors and all this ends unpleasantly bitter. cbkschubert (1989), Cochise Co., Arizona, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 19, 2007 375 ml bottle via trade with DocLock - Pours a dark brown color with a one and a quarter finger thick tan head. Light lacing. Aroma is quite pleasant. It’s floral, light coffee, and esters and a touch of licorice as it warms. Flavor is roasted malt, coffee, light chocolate, and a hint of dark esters. I generally try not to use the word "complex" when describing beer, but this one fits the description. Palate is oh so slightly dry. A tad bit of bitter lingers on the tongue. There is also a bit of alcohol warming. Takes the chill off! Medium to full body. An excellent beer. Thanks Jeff MIBRomeo (1965), Wisconsin, USA

Aroma is tons of roast and chocolate, a moderate amount of alcohol, light notes of soy sauce and molasses. Taste is very roasty with alot of chocolate, some burnt sugars and molasses, and somewhat hot with ethanol. Medium to full body, finishes with alot of roast, chocolate, and some alcohol burn. This is going to be awesome once it mellows. Thanks goes out to whoever shared this bottle! beerbill (1955), Laurel, New York, USA

After having a glass of this year’s release of the SPH RIS yesterday afternoon, I figured I’d follow that up with another great imperial stout this morning for breakfast. Pours black with a moderate light brown head that lasted until about mid-glass. Very pleasant aroma of coffee with notes of roasted malt and some citrus as well. The flavor begins with plenty of coffee and roasted malt flavor, which gives way to a seriously bitter finish. Its difficult to tell if the bitterness is from the coffee or the hops, and I suspect its probably both. Kind of dry, chalky mouthfeel which was a little off-putting, otherwise a solid coffee stout. fordest (1954), Santee/San Diego, California, USA

Huge thanks to sk8viking for this bottle. wonderful aromas of coffee, chocolate and coffee. Roastiness comes through as well, and so does quite a bit of coffee. Black coffee on the flavor as well. More roastiness. Excellent hop finish. One of the best Impy stouts i have ever had. stouby (1948), Holbaek, Denmark

Intensely rich nose of chocolate, soy, tawny port, booze, honey, mushroom, and mild coffee. Complex brew without question. Flavor is just as intense with loads of vanilla booze, deep black chocolate, and more port-like tones. Medium bodied and slick, soft carbonation, dry, bittersweet finish. Think of a cross between Avery Czar, WWS, and Bell’s Batch 7000. A very well made Imperial Stout which I ’m glad to have tried...
