Aroma of roast, coffee, slight chocolate, brown sugar, molasses, and hops. The flavor is slightly sweet, roast and coffee are prodominate, chocolate, spices, vanilla, alcohol is well masked, and has a beautiful hoppy finish. Great brew. marcus (1874), Sacramento, California, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Aug 14, 2008 This black ale poured with a miniscule tan head. There is a very rich malt flavor with a lot of coffee and notes of prune and a bitter finish. This beer is, surprisingly, quite sour yet very pleasant. AmEricanbrew (1860), Washington DC, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Sep 19, 2008 Pitch black with little head. Boozy sweet mocha aroma with sugar, eaweed, and blackened malts. Medium body. Good flavors of strong espresso with a lump of sugar. Finishes with a black malt dryness. The alcohol stayed out of the way here for the most part. mgumby10 (1858), Jupiter, Florida, USA

Thanks a ton for sharing this with me Dan, and for giving me such a generous pour!! Cheeseman strikes again! Pours pitch black, oily, with a smallish, swirly, light brown head. Rich and thick looking. The smell was just awesome. So rich and roasty with subtle chocolate notes, maybe some light vanilla, and syrupy malts. Delicious. Give me a damn sip. The flavor is hugely rich, thick as hell, with such great body. The chocolate seems to arrive more in the flavor to my delight. Great balance as the 14% was only slightly noticeable. Huge roasty finish that seemed to linger into eternity. It took me a while to finish this as I savored every last drop. Thanks again Dan for sharing this beauty. I loved every minute of it! | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Apr 20, 2007 Bottle. An exceptional looking beer with a pitch black color and a bright brown head. Powerful nose, that keeps changing. Hints of fruit, chocolate and hops.
Really hoppy, especially after the mid-palate. In fact, I’d say that the hops play the dominant role in this beer after that point. The finish, along with being really hoppy, also shows some nice malt as well and overall, the finish is quite nice and seems to be last a long time. Sham (1846), Seattle, Washington, USA

Vinous and a bit of alcohol. The coffee comes out with a vengeance. Strong roast malts and bitter hops. Oil thick body that coats the mouth heavily. Finishes off a bit hot and malty. nearbeer (1835), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA

Aroma is coffee, chocolate, citrus, and slight uric acid. Flavors of coffee, cocoa, citrus herb hops, and slight alcohol. Smooth medium body is watery and finishes dry. Schroppfy (1813), Ohio, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jul 8, 2008 Roasty, acrid, coffeeish and a touch sour. Plummy, but not with the richness as in many of my favorite imperials. A good mix, but hot and thinning. It is a big beer all around and the flavors meld pretty well, but the alcohol is strong and detracting a bit. Aroma is a strong point; really nice coffee aromas.
Thanks to Kevin for the bottle!
