Aroma of dark chocolate, roasted malts, rich espresso and a bit of ash. Flavor was molasses, soy, chocolate, some vanilla and a strong alcohol presence on the finish. Very rich texture, but a bit cloying. Very good, but not really my cup of tea. footbalm (1219), Salt Lake City, Utah, USA

So this is the second batch but man, this was tasty. Thick and rich. Like biting into a coffee and chocolate confection. Has a bit of bitterness which nicely complimented the richness. Bubbly lacing. Aroma of espresso, molasses, chicory and vanilla. Rich coffee flavor with toasted malts, vanilla and alcohol dipped dark fruits. Soft chalk flavors near the finish. Enjoyable. Maybe I’m just not man enough, but this beer doesn’t quite live up to my expectations. Too hot, too sourly vinous (I love sour, but not necessarily in a coffee imperial stout), too over-the-top to be truly great.
Pours extremely dark and heavily viscous with a vinous aroma, charred wood, a bit of robutussin (alcohol, cherry, sugars, medicinal). And very vinous flavors, sourness competing with the roasts, again that cherry cough syrup especially toward the close. Cold, acidic black coffee. Cough syrup mouthfeel; no, this one isn’t coming together for me at all. Maybe with a ton of age on it, but for now I’m pretty unexcited. markwise (1200), 15 Minutes from Kuhnhenn in, Florida, USA

Nose is roasted malts, coffee, dark chocolate, and some booze. Does not come across as 13% ETOH at all. Flavor is sticky coffee, dark roast, and some slight booziness. Medium bodied and lingering with cafe con leche. Tons of yellow lace on the glass, and a nice medium-full bodied beer. jcr (1190), Jasper, Indiana, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Apr 10, 2009 12.7 oz. bottle. 2007. Impenetrable black body with a short, frothy, dark brown head. Malty aroma of roasted grain and sweet molasses. Notes of coffee, vanilla, dough, alcohol and oxidation. The flavor is moderately sweet and moderately bitter. It finishes heavily bitter atop moderate sweetness. Tastes of bitter coffee with a hint of licorice and lots of alcohol. Full body with a creamy texture. Soft carbonation. Very good, but not great. | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Oct 20, 2008 Bottle. Pours almost pitch black with a firm brown head. Rich aroma; chocolate, roasted/barbeque notes and a certain tanginess mixed together. Brandy-like notes as it warms. Flavour is roasted with a blend of chocolate and liquorice notes. Finish is a great roasted coffee with lingering hops. Sweeeet! Stingy alcohol notes as well. 20-10-08. moejuck (1172), Ohio, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 22, 2007 C-bus 7. Aroma is a nice sweet chocolate with some brown sugar and malts. Black with a thin head. Medium palate. Boozey up front with a really nice sweet malt presence behind that--not too sweet. I get a nice wood presence and some coffee as well. Much better than the "X".
