Boozy, chocolate aroma. Dark black pour. Sweet, but bitter at the same time, more alcohol heat as well. This was good, will be even better with some time on it. pineypower (1104), Pine Barrens, New Jersey, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jan 19, 2008 Bottle. Pours out thick like motor oil, nice brown head and intense aroma. Aroma is of coffee, chocolate, and roasted malt. Taste is very filling and complex. Coffee up front goes into a nice chocolate with some notes of dark fruits and slight earthy notes with some roasted malt lingering around in the background. Very nice! kenb (1100), Oregon, USA

Pours almost black with a large tan head that sustains itself for quite awhile. Nose is full of toasted grains and roasted malts with lots of berry esters and fusel alcohol. Tastes is like the AROMA but with lots of plums, raisins, and licorice. Medium body. Pretty tasty for such a high abv beer. 00cobraR (1098), Greensboro, North Carolina, USA

| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Jan 27, 2007 Updated: Jun 2, 2007Bottle #80 of 100. Four months later, bottle #08 of 100, still remarkable. Pours motor oil thick, black and opaque. Even the well retained but thin head of fat, tan bubbles is totally impervious to light. Looks menacingly thick with pretty albeit sparse lacing. Aroma is one of intense viscosity, powerful and subjugating. I have been coerced into loving it without tasting it. Nuances of sugar-sweet alcohol burn, maybe the most pleasing alcohol component I’ve encountered in big dark beer to date. This also has scents of melted bitter chocolates, a little lacto character, molasses, cherries, brown sugar that’s been scorched to a pan’s surface and fresh coffee from the finest neighborhood roaster. It all seems very lively. Fantastically complex aroma, a mosaic of fragrance. Flavor isn’t exactly one sided either, focusing at first on smokiness, but of a very welcoming nature; no bacon flavor here. This the most complex variety of smoky flavors I’ve yet encountered, this thing just won’t stop amazing. Roasty malt with a bite is nicely offset by more complex sugars(the honey I suppose). The chocolate taste is strong, the coffee stronger still. The finish is mostly of coffee with a dash of creamer and a little vanilla and chocolate. The palate is so full, wow. The lingering taste is so mouth-fillling so long after swallowing. I hope another opportunity at this presents itself. Simply breathtaking. kujo9 (1078), North Ridgeville, Ohio, USA

I feel bad even rating this already since I’ve not even sent yours in return yet, but thank you! Black hole... No shit! I poured about 4 oz. into a Corsendonk Christmas Ale glass, and there is no light that passes through this, even held up in front of a light bulb! Black with a short lived, thin, mocha tan head! Alcohol, light coffee, brown sugar sweetness and malt, fresh crushed malt, light caramel and dark fruit, and an herbal hop aroma that I can’t quite place between all the other aromas; All in the nose at first. A fruity chocolate follows, but I can’t distinguish the fruitiness. A moderate toffee as it warms... Also some spicy yeast character. And that’s just the nose! Flavor is sweet up front, chocolatey, lightly coffee, lightly tart from dark grains mid palate. Caramel, toasty malt, fig fruit, dark molasses slightly burnt/acrid flavor as it warms, but not strong. Actually adds to the complexity of the flavor. Toffee and toasty malt, but an odd sweet/tart balance throughout from the grains. Finish is lighlty coffee and toasty malt flavored. Very slight touch of smoke, hop flavor and other spice in the aftertaste. medium body, very light carbonation and well hidden alcohol, but the mouth dries out in the finish. I like it, but I’m not enamored with it! It’s well made technically, but I’m not sure I like the odd sweet/tart balance that dominates the flavor from up front almost to the finish. It’s a good sipper, but I’m not sure I’d want more than 1 of these in a night, and not just because of the alcohol. chicagodri (1071), Chicago, Illinois, USA

It has a bit of a kick to it (which it should for 14%). Has a little bit of bitterness to it. Lots of coffee, chocolate, and a bit of dark fruit to the flavor. Almost has a syrup like consistency to it. M0RHI (1067), Luxembourg, Luxembourg
