| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Mar 30, 2008 Pours a very dark brown with a short but full light brown head. Aroma of sweet, lightly roasted caramel malts and black pepper mixed with coffee. Also some hop aroma. Taste is incredibly unique for a stout. Very sweet and almost fruity at first with a finish full of that black pepper/coffee flavor along with alcohol. The body is very creamy and hints at chocolate. Very complex flavor palate. paiste2002 (158), Saugus, California, USA

Pours black with a smallish tan head that quickly fell away to a thin ring. Aroma is huge coffee, chocolate, black malt and alcohol. Flavor is coffee, dark chocolate, alcohol, bittersweet chocolaty finish with maybe a touch of black licorice at the very end. This is a very nice beer, I really enjoyed this one. fidel (1012), Livermore, California, USA

| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | May 21, 2009 Cork is removed with a slightly understated "poomf." Immediately hit with sweet, almost milk choc aromas, less coffee than expected from these guys. Sweetness dies away leaving an almost chalky like smell, almost a peaty aroma, followed by espresso, black olives. Palate is just the right texture, oil slick which slides over the tongue and fills the mouth. Very strong flavour, immediately bitter and sweet to the max almost simultaneously. Once again shockingly controlled alcohol. At 13% I was expecting a bit of warmth, but I have to say it’s only very subtle and not constant, but you can feel the effects, I’m a third of the way through and I feel the beginning of sedation kicking in. All in all, a black hole indeed. Like drinking an over-sweetened triple espresso mocha concoction, if anything bordering on too sweet for my palate, but I’m prepared to forgo that for the quality of craftsmanship, complexity and the fact I can taste about 4 or 5 different types of chocolate all in one glass, some vintage port notes, treacle etc. offset by a subtle saltiness (olives - see above). One of the easiest impy’ stouts I’ve come across, though has to be treated with the upmost respect. Good old Mikkeller! Strykzone (1497), Wood River, Illinois, USA

Sustainable tan head. Coffee, dark chocolate, and dark fruit in the aroma that is a bit sour. Flavor is not what the aroma would suggest. Much more fruit and chocolate and much less coffee notes. This is almost a cherry chocolate beer with a super high ABV. It is also brings some salt. The feel is very rich and smooth. Chocolate is a bit cloying but this is a delicious beer Sigmund (2300), Hafrsfjord, Norway
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 10, 2009 375 ml "champagne" bottle, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 13.1%. The beer is pitch black, impenetrable for light (hence the name). Nice brown head. Intense aroma of malts, alcohol, coffee, burnt sugar and vanilla. The flavour is intense and overwhelming: an aggressive malty sweetness, backed up by honey and dark sugars, with distinct notes of roasted barley (but not quite as extreme in that respect as I expected ), the coffee is distinct, and the vanilla is also noticeable. Distinct hoppy bitterness in the finish. Warming mouthfeel. This is a "sipping beer", to be savoured slowly - definitely not a "refreshment beer". Not for the squeamish or faint hearted.
