Pours deep amber, minimal, not very persistent head. Nose of spun sugar, plum pudding, cinnamon?. Palate is big and rich with just hints of the expected smoke and peat from the barrels. Vanilla, spice, toffee, a bit o’ burn but within reason for 12.1%. Roasty and rich, warming. Needs time but tasting intriguing now.

Hazy cider brown, with almost no white head. Aroma is fermented fruits and toffee with slight notes of vanilla and orange peel. Taste is malty with raisin character and finishes in a pithy bitterness and rubbing alcohol. Carbonation is relatively brisk $12/12oz

The color is beautiful, hazy, red-brown and the head is creamy. The aroma has notes of roasted malt, raisin, caramel and fruit. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, raisin, caramel, light alcohol, chocolate, citrus and a light bitterness. The finish is very long and lasting – a truly nice beer.

Bottle from SL. Pour was brown-red, nice off-white colored creamy head, good lacing. The aroma was boozy, caramel, fruits (peach, apricot, apples, some dark nuances in there too). The flavor followed, but it was a tad on the astringent side, acidity detectable, alcohol level quite smooth relative to the ABV and aroma. Dry woody notes along with some scotch type notes. Mouthfeel was full and malty. Meh, an ok brew.

"Bottled on 07/05/09" light brown-orange pour with thin fizzy yellow-beige head. very apricot-y aroma, with a deep sweetness and heady alcohol. like alcoholic apricot pie. similar flavor is more assertive, with intense sweet, sour, bitter, and alcohol elements. as it warms there is more vanilla and oak throughout, and overall it becomes more balanced. medium-bodied and very smooth, with a long bittersweet hops and alcohol finish.

The Dan Journal #315. Tasted 11/4/09. 330ml bottle. Hazy and brackish. Ring of off-white head. Malty aromas with a touch caramel and caramel. Full bodied with a big burn. Dark toasted malts and a big burning blast of tart citrus. The barrel and spirits are definitely noticeable. Might need some time in the bottle.

Bottle: Pours a transparent dark copper orange with an airy off-white head. Aroma of sweet toasty dark caramel and butterscotch with some oaky whiskey notes. Starts with pretty good caramel malty fullness with some light fruity notes and peaty smoke flavor before a smooth semi-sweet and warming finish. Has good complexity throughout with a nice balance of Scotch flavor. An enjoyable barleywine.
