Boutip (1745), Gatineau, Quebec, Canada Jul 9, 2008 Bottle: Poured a deep cloudy copper color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and good lacing. Aroma of European dry hops is totally dominating. Taste is a mix between some huge dry and somewhat floral European hops and a huge malt base. Full body with some great carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Very well done for the style but this is a style that I have a hard tie to dig – I find beer tend to be too dry.

ABV, Volume & Calories: 8 % in 22.4 fl oz. estimated at 400 C
Purchased at: Canal’s Lawrenceville, NJ for $14.99
Aroma: heavy malt, syrupy, coke syrup, caramel. 10 out of 10.
Visuals: cloudy, misty bronze, beautiful white long lasting head, intricate lace. 5 out of 5.
Taste: hoppy, roasted grains, dark, beautifully crafted. 10 out of 10.
Palate: solid, heavy, long bitter finish. 5 out of 5.
Overall: Makes me think of what a lager could be if any attention or care was put to it. Absolutely beautiful. I’d have it again in a second. It’s not a favorite because the style isn’t a favorite, but if more lagers were like this, I’d seek them out. Beautifully crafted. 18 out of 20.

Pine and citrus notes soar off of this beer, these two also combine to great effect in the mouth along with a touch of cape gooseberry just to add an additional tang, I like this but feel that it comes across as more of an IPA than a European strong lager, I’m really surprised that it isn’t an IPA, anyway regardless of where it sits its lovely. Yet another very good beer from Mikkeller. MartinT (4307), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Aug 13, 2008 My Bottom Line:
Orangey and piney hoppiness overtakes the polite caramel maltiness before it plants a lengthy resinous and herbal bitterness to this fluffy hybrid of a Strong Lager.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-Mountainous foam lasts forever atop the nearly clear amber-orange.
-The foam, which you have to take a bite of before getting your first sip, is very bitter!
-The Amarillo and Cascade intensity (especially in the finish) might be a little too much for the malt structure. Then again, I don’t think they were going for balance here.
-Alcohol burns at first, but is not bothersome after a few sips.
-The cushiony effervescence helps to make this powerful lager quite drinkable.
-I found the first half of each sip to be rather easygoing, while the second half was much louder.
Bottle; best before 13/12/2008. Bockyhorsey (1951), Mesa, Arizona, USA Aug 11, 2008 Bottle. Good citrus aroma on the nose which was a suprise. Golden body color with big white head. Some fruit in flavor but mainly carbinated bitter beer with a big belch on the finish. NJBeerman013 (575), Trenton, New Jersey, USA Aug 10, 2008 750 ml Bottle. Pours a warm golden in color with a pure white, fluffy head. The aroma is sweet and fruity. It has a nice citrus zing. The flavor is a dry, citrusy mix having almost a wheaty quality. It has a medium body, a well rounded flavor, and a smooth, warm finish centering around an alcohol and fuity character. An interesting beer from begining to end.
