Pours a creamy opaque near black with a tall sudsy foamy airy light mocha colored head. Aroma is wonderfully full and spicy, rich hard roasted malts, coffee, bakers chocolate, chocolate cookies, quite doughy, oxidation at a minimum, trying hard to pick out each spice individually, the anise is quite light but detectable, and the clove, cinnamon and coriander blend together in a typical holiday spice cake way. Flavor is equally full and wonderful, very spice cake like, reminds me slightly of the Beer Here Morke Pumpernickel, slightly metallic, hops have aged nicely, the spicy saaz is quite nice, followed by a nice citrusy kick from the amarillo and cascade, almost gives the impression of some brett, which makes me wonder what this would taste like with brett, creamy bitter dark chocolate and sweeter milk chocolate, robust christmas pudding flavors, somewhat dried out with a nice tangy kick, not especially roasty except towards the finish, quick aftertaste, I’m really thinking this might have the slightest infection which is very pleasant, all the individual components work very harmoniously together, fairly bitter in the aftertaste. Medium bodied, creamy milky sensation but still light in the mouth, somewhat dry, medium sized somewhat sharp airy carbonation. Fantastic, I could see this with even another year on it! goozen (1102), Leiden, Netherlands

App.: Brown-black with a large creamy tan froth.
Aroma: Tangy bright fruits, some light anise and warm-ish spices, strong molasses, some cacao, some piney hops, a bit soapy, dark chocolate and black coffee, big and complex.
Palate: Medium body and fairly soft effervescence.
Flav.: More chocolate than the nose, still a nice blend of spices, some bright fruits, pine/resin/slightly soapy hops, vanilla, cacao, black coffee, lots of flavours that are well-integrated; a little off-dry with a little tang, nice bitterness and a complex finish.

Roasted malt, coffee, mixed spices, citrus, saltiness, alcohol, a bit citric/sourish. Rather light bodied. A bit too citric and spicy for my taste. 5000 (2641), Hardened Liver, Washington, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Dec 17, 2009 Bottle:   Black, huge rocky light brown head, nice lacing. Soft roasted malt nose, pale anise, other spices, nutmeg, spruce/pine.   Reminds me of a lighter version of Anchor Our Special Ale.   Darker, but lighter in spices that is.   A little dry, more roastiness appears on the finish.   Moderate body and mouthfeel.   Feels a little gritty on the exit.   Good beer, not as heavy or roasty as I would have thought based on the color.   Nice winter warmer.

Aroma is rich chocolate and coffee. Flavor is very rich, toasty, and smokey, with bitter chocolate, coffee, prune, raisin, and a light holiday spiciness. Has a very rich, smooth, velvety mouthfeel. Very flavorful, yet easy to drink. I feel like I could keep sipping this forever. Sledutah (120), Utah, USA
