pepsican (884), The Student Ghetto, Iowa, USA Apr 11, 2008 Dark brown with a thick off white hide. Aroma was strong coffee, chocolate, hazelnut, and roast malts. Flavor kind of falls off a bit. The hops are pretty forward in this and just don’t blend very well. The coffee and chocolate that smelled great just taste off. eaglefan538 (2355), Wilmington, Delaware, USA Apr 10, 2008 Bottle from SL, and wow was this sucker bitter! Pour was brown with an ok head and lacing. Aroma was strong piney type hops, strong roast, coffee. The flavor was strong coffee-choco with a level of roast that was astringently bitter, licorice, finishing with a mouthfull of hops bitterness. Sorry, not my cup of tea, over the top roasted bitterness, mouthfeel somewhat thin for as big as this thing looked and tasted. 17thfloor (1403), Chicago, Illinois, USA Apr 10, 2008 Updated: Apr 18, 2008Sweet! Opened the bottle to a funky nasty pungent vinous smell... poured and then settled my nose into the snifter to find a wonderful fresh hop aroma, followed by notes of coffee grounds, brown sugar and cinnamon/toffee apples. Great looking pour, deep ruby brown with a lovely creamy frothy grayish beige head. Leaves beautiful lacing on the glass. Sweet nutty fresh ground coffee flavors. Dry metallic tangy finish even with the lingering sweetness. Some citrus and a very present underlying hop bitterness. Watery, light but smooth carbonation, wish is had some more substance. This really would be sooo delectable if the body stood up to the delightful flavors. IPA like qualities emerge the more I drink: candy malt and fresh citrus hops. This beer has that quality that makes you feel warm and good inside... there should be a name for that.... * FlacoAlto (2473), Tucson, Arizona, USA Apr 9, 2008 August 2006 Bottle Date; Sampled April 2008
Pours with a frothy, tan colored head that is somewhat large bubbled, but . The beer is a rusty, dark brown color, but shows a brilliantly clear, cranberry hue when held up to the light. The aroma is quite malty, but still has a hoppy edge to it. Chewy malt aromatics remind me of light, but definitely roasted coffee beans, well toasted bread crust, big chewy brown malt aromas and some sweet caramel. The hop character provides a backdrop of herbal pine and some citrus fruit notes (but this is hard to pick out from the roast grain notes). The brown malt character in this beer is huge, though the chocolate malt plays a big role here too; very roasty, very coffee like.
Fizzy with a bit more carbonation than is needed, but a quick swirl of my glass takes care of that. As I swirl I get aromas of cherries and musty malt. Fairly dry tasting (especially with all the roast character), but it does have a touch of soft, caramelized malt character that adds just a touch of sweetness before the darker malt character kicks in and dries the finish out. Speaking of the finish, the roast character is quite prominent here providing a mix of flavors ranging from espresso, a light burnt acidity, a touch of charcoal, toasted bread, some burnt grain husk astringency. There is still some hop character left in the flavor too; there is a definite bitterness, but there is also a citrus character (tangelo & bergamot) that is noticeable at times, and a pine like character seems to always form a subtle backdrop to each sip.
This is a surprisingly roast flavored beer for the color, I think that the brown malt is the likely culprit as somehow a little of this goes a long way. A tasty brew though that has a nice, perceived dryness to it because of all of the roast character. This is a very tasty beer that is aging quite well, all this roast character could have this easily going a couple more years. DicksMcGee (54), Seattle, Washington, USA Apr 7, 2008 Huge head, pour with caution. nose of coffee and citrus. Taste of Coffee, anise, hazelnut, some chocolate. Pretty bitter finish. Great for a brown. Cornfield (4892), Oak Forest, Illinois, USA Apr 6, 2008 This poured a clear reddish brown body with a HUGE rocky, light beige head that coated the glass with thick lacework. The aroma is an interesting blend of yellow grapefruit and citrus zest, bitter nuts, caramelly malts, coffee, and bittersweet chocolate. Nice & crisp sharp flavors reflect the sensations from the nose. The citric and nut bitterness remains a strong constant throughout the drink. Interestingly, a touch of aniseed joins the fray near the finish. Not too shabby.

TheCheeseMan (538), Saint Cloud, Florida, USA Apr 5, 2008 Pours a chestnut brown, small head formation. Aroma is roasted nuts, coffee, malts, some vanilla. The flavor is robust yet balanced. The roasted component comes through nicely, with the coffee not present in the aroma coming on a bit stronger on the finish. The ore I drink this, the more I like it. ciuspan (94), Hillerød, Denmark Apr 5, 2008 Smagt 4/4 2008. Den er meget humlet for meget for min smag. Det bliver for bittert og det skal en brown ale ikke være ifølge min vurdering. Men ingen tvivl om at den er brygget med kompetance
