DocLock (4648), Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 3, 2008 Bottle. Pours hazy dark brown with 3-finger tan head. Aroma was roasty malty, with brown sugar, mild chocolate, and mild hops. Tastes rich, roasty malty, with some brown sugary nuts, mild chocolate, and a solid dose of finishing hops. This one is a nice take on a rather boring style. argo0 (6861), Washington DC, USA Mar 2, 2008 (50cl bottle, thanks kmweaver) Large beige head atop hazy chestnut body. Aroma is medium sweet, caramel, Mikkeller house yeast, some chocolate, light raisin. Taste is medium sweet, caramel, raisin, herbal/grapefruit, some yeast, smoke. Low carbonation, light-medium body, some creaminess. kmweaver (2396), Sebastopol, California, USA Mar 1, 2008 22oz bottle. Pours a dark, clear reddish-tea color; huge, textured light tan head with fantastic retention and lacing; a nice pour. Lots of dark, bitter chocolate and coffee and mineral bitterness in the aroma; lots of coffee and breadiness present. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: bitter chocolate, breadiness, toasted malts, and coffee throughout; an especially generous brown ale, with a nice level of mineral bitterness. Lengthy finish, showing bitter chocolate, bread, and coffee. ryan (1774), Beltsville, Maryland, USA Mar 1, 2008 Courtesy of kmweaver. Clear dark amber/brown with a small beige head. The nose is sweet and hoppy with caramel, toffee, citrus and pine. The flavor is lightly sweet, moderately bitter with grapefruit, pine, toffee and light roast. Medium body is round with moderate carbonation. stangger (155), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Feb 25, 2008 Updated: Mar 4, 2008Bottle. Pours a dark brown with a massive frothy head. Aroma is roast coffee and a little bit of citrus hoppiness... Taste is coffee, espresso, a hint of chocolate, some nuttiness. Aftertaste is powerful bitter/coffee. Nice, thick mouthfeel. Gets even better as it warms up - the nuttiness becomes very apparent. Monstrously expensive in PA ($110/12 16oz bottles) Syd (888), Waconia, Minnesota, USA Feb 23, 2008 Bottle pours black and ruby highlights with a monster creamy looking white head with clingy lace – interesting to look at the head/beer line as it is very distinct (not sure if this makes any sense, but it looks great this way). The aroma is hops, yeast, roasted darkness, smoke, and freshly pulled resinous ganja (in theory, not practice). The flavor has lots fresh tasting hops, anise, solid roasted malts, inevitable ale fruit notes, more bitterness, and just overall very delicious. This is an awesome Brown, but so hard to rate after the awesome beers I’ve rated this evening. Of note here are the hops that taste so fresh against the chocolate and coffee backbone. This is very interesting. hopdog (5534), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA Feb 23, 2008 Bottle. Poured a medium to deeper and hazy reddish brown color with a larger sized off white head. Aromas of roast, pine, coffee with cream, and chocolate. Tastes of coffee, roast, dark chocolate, floral hoppiness, and maybe some citrus. Light lacing left on a glass. For a brown ale, this one was pretty good. Pinball (2693), Allerød, Denmark Feb 23, 2008 bolttle, 50cl. 2008.
Perhaps it’s just because i’m not that fond of this kind of beer. But it was nothing specail, and it felt like i could get somewhat the same taste from ordinary beers in a way cheaper price category. If i disregard price the beerr is okay, drinkable, nice, quite good. quite bitter and smoked. The other mikkeler i’ve tasted have been a lot better.
i guess it’s the uncompromized mix of bitterness and a hint of burnt wood’ness that turns me off. Perhaps the alc.% is too low??
