NicerInPerson (337), North of Raleigh, North Carolina, USA Feb 22, 2008 The aroma was roasty with a strong dark chocolate impression and a presence of coffee, espresso coffee, through the beige frothy, moussy and tall head. The aroma showcased dark chocolate, coffee, and a presence of dark fruits, raisins and prunes, as the head slowly retreated. Some grassy hop presence was notable as well. The beer poured into the glass crystal clear amber brown with that huge head which laced the glass till it begged for mercy. The flavor was bitter with grassy and citrusy bittering kicking you in the teeth. The resinous hop profile was somewhat unexpected after an aroma filled with chocolate and coffee. The flavor contained coffee, espresso coffee, once again, but more prevalent was the aggressive bittering which was resinous and grassy and had a bit of citrus hop flavor. The finish was bone dry with lasting hop flavor and bittering long into the aftertaste with a eventual flavor of coffee in the finality of the flavor. The body was medium with a moderate level of carbonation. No appreciable alcohol was notable. The aroma was great, the flavor was pure hop juice, but somehow the beer worked out. 16.9 ounce bottle. Brix (371), Denmark Feb 22, 2008 Tasted 2008-02-22. 1 year old bottle. Pours semi clear, chestnut coloured wih a beige head. Aroma: Hops, grass, chocolate, coffee. Flavours: Lingering bitterness! medium to full body. I like it very much! GMCC2181 (846), Bear, Delaware, USA Feb 18, 2008 Nice brown/amber color. Monster head, which was a frosty/creamy color. When I smelled this beer I got punched in the nose by hops. I wanst expecting that at all. It also smelled like a brown ale. At first, the taste the hops hits you. Seconds later, a smooth taste of nutty roasted malt. Good texture. It has the perfect blend of hops and brown ale characteristics. This could easily be an every day drinker. One of my new favorite beers! JPDIPSO (4865), Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, USA Feb 17, 2008 Ruby chestnut color with a very tall, lasting dark beige head. Chocolate, darker malts, and plenty of hops. There is something about the hops and malt combination in a brown that is not that appealing to me. Crisp and clean feeling liquid, nearly lager like. Somewhat toasty and nutty malt taken back by Herbal and slightly citric hops bitterness. Things stay bitter will into the linger. I slight return of malt would have been pleasant. As it is an interesting hoppy brown brew. ratman197 (3139), Arvada, Colorado, USA Feb 17, 2008 500 ml bottle poured a lightly hazy reddish brown with a lasting tan head. Aromas of toasted malt, cocoa, citrus and pine. Palate was medium bodied and smooth with a dry finish. Flavors of toasted malt, pine, grapefruiut rind, light cocoa and light earthiness with a smooth lingering bitter finish. One of the beszt browns I’ve tasted! Too hoppy for most I’m sure but a true Hopheads delight. nearbeer (1833), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Feb 17, 2008 500 ml. A see-through, dark copper-brown brew with a four-finger head that sticks everywhere. Aroma is big hops - citrus, floral, and resin notes. Flavor is similar, with a bit of cocoa and toasted nut flavors able to battle through the hops. Some nice roasted notes finally show up in the aftertaste about 8 oz. into this one. Smooth, near-medium body finishes slightly dry and tingly. Mixed feelings about how to rate this nice-enough tasting session ale. It disappoints a bit as a brown due to the lack of maltiness, but is pretty good if I thought I was in the mood for a heavier APA. KAF (441), Coralville, Iowa, USA Feb 16, 2008 Thanks to Badgerben. Thin dark brown with little head. Slightly roasted cocoa aroma. Very thin body. Coffee, bitter chocolate and hops in the taste. The aftertaste leaves a dry chalkiness. badgerben (3586), Blaine, Minnesota, USA Feb 16, 2008 Dark brown color with a thin head. Dark chocolate aroma, plenty of nuttiness and English-earthy hops. Strong nut taste, predominantly walnut. Some chocolate and coffee. The hops are pretty strong for a Brown Ale and they seem to be floral/Noble hops. Quite a chalky feel. Good.
