bhensonb (3005), Woodland, California, USA May 4, 2008 500 ml bottle. Aroma of citrus and pine. Unexpected. Dark mahogany color with a multifinger beige head. Medium body with coarse carbonation. Piney hop instantly followed by a lot of coffee. A little light stone fruit slips in, then it’s back to hops and coffee. Suddenly some chocolate is noticeable along the edges of my tongue. It’s very pleasing in the mouth. Expensive, but ya gotta pay what ya gotta pay - just not every day. The finish doesn’t quit - the flavors stay until the end. This is hop conquering malt, but in a refined, gentle manner. Lot of hop though.
satan165 (131), River Grove, Illinois, USA Oct 3, 2008 smoky brown color, small aroma which is almost metallic. flavor is overhopped for the style, overwhelmingly bitter. some coffee, the aftertaste is not the taste of coffee....it is the aftertaste of coffee, like 2 hours after you drank some. why so many hops? doesnt seem to be necessary, and it irritates the smooth mouthfeel id like from a brown ale. too dry, too bitter, too thin. this is interesting, but its not a very good brown ale in my book. emerica56 (477), Bristol, Rhode Island, USA Oct 2, 2008 Pours a thick tan head with streaks along the sides of the glass. The color is a semi clear nut brown. The nose is of floral and citrus hops. The flavor is nice and robust with a ton of chocolate malt and hints of roasted coffee. But it is not too roasted, it is nice and balanced. It is hopped very well and the carbonation is perfect. Overall it is a great brown ale and nice and refreshing. DougShoemaker (2612), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Oct 2, 2008 Aroma is roasted, nearly toasted malt, and an influence of nuts also. Deep brown, pours a small tan head. Flavour is toasty malt, pleasant nuttiness, with some woody undertones. Medium bodied, very nicely balanced, lovely mouthfeel. Fabulous! armando629 (428), Budapest, Hungary Sep 29, 2008 Brown body with a frothy creamy beige head. Aroma of the hop flowers like resin with roasted malt and coffee. Complex mouthfeel with the caramel and coffe tastes, strong personality with a good balanced but powerfull hop flavo. Fine and long aftertaste of the roasted grains and coffe. Thank you, Mikkeller, it was really fine!r PaulHegedus (115), Brampton, Ontario, Canada Sep 27, 2008 The afro on the label is priceless, first off. Bottle at Volo, shared with folkbeer. This really is one complex mother of a beer. Pours a wonderful brown, dark, almost black with a creamy head, beautiful and thick when poured (but died quickly) in a short, goblet like glass. There’s cherry and other dark fruits in the aroma, maybe some prune with plenty of wonderful, dark roasted coffee beans and a hint of fresh chocolate. Mouthfeel is medium with a slight, slight wateriness. The flavour is full, complex and full of strong dark roasted coffee, dark cherry with a background nuttiness. Smooth blend and balance between flavours. A medium dry finish with hops and savoury chocolate.
