The beer pours to a red-hued brown body with a really creamy tan head and spotty lacing. The aroma is grainy. Fresh, crisp, clean barley, chocolate malt. Some pine/spruce hops. The flavor is crisp, barley, chocolate, light dry black patent, hoppy pine needles. The flavors and aromas are nicely blended. The palate is creamy, bitter, dry on the finish. This is definitely a phenomenal brown ale. Thanks for sharing Jason! Bockyhorsey (2552), Mesa, Arizona, USA

Full bodyied brew with the creamy chcocolate flavor. Coffee also stood out in the flavor as well. Little biter in the end but this on was smooth on the palate. Good brew. | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 16, 2008 Bottle. Dark brown with ruby hints and a good sized mocha head. Aroma is rich and roasty, with great notes of coffee and chocolate, and a surprising hit of hops. Flavour follows the aroma, with some nice nuttiness coming through before the hops kick in. Seems to be bordering on being a porter, which is fine by me. Great stuff! kramer (2510), Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA

Pours a clear chestnut brown body under a small foamy beige head that receded to a thin covering. Aroma is nutty and toasted malt with a slight graininess. Some light chocolate, roast, and coffee notes as well. Flavor is pretty robust for a Brown Ale. Nicely nutty with lots of toasted and lightly roasted malt. Finishes a little harsh and grainy with moderate bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, grainy in texture, with moderate fizzy carbonation. Overall, this was pretty flavorful for a Brown Ale, but the finish was a little bit of a turn-off. OhioDad (2491), Hilliard, Ohio, USA

Aroma surprisingly of greapefruit hops over some caramel and roast. Flavor is carame and brown sugar but alot of unexpected pine and grapefruit flavor is as well with a healthy amount of roasted malt. Oily and smooth palate with good carbonation. Very interesting brown ale here!! kmweaver (2484), Sebastopol, California, USA

Pours a dark, clear reddish-tea color; huge, textured light tan head with fantastic retention and lacing; a nice pour. Lots of dark, bitter chocolate and coffee and mineral bitterness in the aroma; lots of coffee and breadiness present. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: bitter chocolate, breadiness, toasted malts, and coffee throughout; an especially generous brown ale, with a nice level of mineral bitterness. Lengthy finish, showing bitter chocolate, bread, and coffee. FlacoAlto (2482), Tucson, Arizona, USA

Pours with a frothy, tan colored head that is somewhat large bubbled, but . The beer is a rusty, dark brown color, but shows a brilliantly clear, cranberry hue when held up to the light. The aroma is quite malty, but still has a hoppy edge to it. Chewy malt aromatics remind me of light, but definitely roasted coffee beans, well toasted bread crust, big chewy brown malt aromas and some sweet caramel. The hop character provides a backdrop of herbal pine and some citrus fruit notes (but this is hard to pick out from the roast grain notes). The brown malt character in this beer is huge, though the chocolate malt plays a big role here too; very roasty, very coffee like.
Fizzy with a bit more carbonation than is needed, but a quick swirl of my glass takes care of that. As I swirl I get aromas of cherries and musty malt. Fairly dry tasting (especially with all the roast character), but it does have a touch of soft, caramelized malt character that adds just a touch of sweetness before the darker malt character kicks in and dries the finish out. Speaking of the finish, the roast character is quite prominent here providing a mix of flavors ranging from espresso, a light burnt acidity, a touch of charcoal, toasted bread, some burnt grain husk astringency. There is still some hop character left in the flavor too; there is a definite bitterness, but there is also a citrus character (tangelo & bergamot) that is noticeable at times, and a pine like character seems to always form a subtle backdrop to each sip.
This is a surprisingly roast flavored beer for the color, I think that the brown malt is the likely culprit as somehow a little of this goes a long way. A tasty brew though that has a nice, perceived dryness to it because of all of the roast character. This is a very tasty beer that is aging quite well, all this roast character could have this easily going a couple more years. ekstedt (2447), Göteborg, Sweden
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Nov 8, 2007 Bottle (66 cl) from Ølbutikken, Copenhagen, Denmark. An American style brown ale with dominant piney hop aromas, and some roasted chocolate notes in the background. If I close my eyes I think I can sense some of those green pepper notes that abound in Beer Geek Breakfeast and Black Hole. Clear reddish brown with a large and long-lasting tan head, medium bodied with soft carbonation. Very bitter finish. Very nice but I would prefer the bitterness and hop aromas to be moderated a bit to give room for a more roasted malt profile.
