Opened the bottle to a funky nasty pungent vinous smell... poured and then settled my nose into the snifter to find a wonderful fresh hop aroma, followed by notes of coffee grounds, brown sugar and cinnamon/toffee apples. Great looking pour, deep ruby brown with a lovely creamy frothy grayish beige head. Leaves beautiful lacing on the glass. Sweet nutty fresh ground coffee flavors. Dry metallic tangy finish even with the lingering sweetness. Some citrus and a very present underlying hop bitterness. Watery, light but smooth carbonation, wish is had some more substance. This really would be sooo delectable if the body stood up to the delightful flavors. IPA like qualities emerge the more I drink: candy malt and fresh citrus hops. This beer has that quality that makes you feel warm and good inside... there should be a name for that.... * dmac (1466), Toms River, New Jersey, USA

Nose is pine-grapefruit with a musty, doughy sweetness. Medium light and resiny with a sprinkling of carb. Taste is grapefruit but not much more. Woody drying. I could not find the Brown in this ale. Big hopy aroma with lots of grapefruit peel and a dusting of chocolate powder. The flavor hits you with a lot of coffee and hops. Bitter and piny, without much malt sweetness. At first this put me off, but it just got more and more drinkable toward the end. Reminds me a lot of dark-chocolate covered espresso beans. The body is clean, light and airy. The bitterness lasts in the finish. Kind of like and IPA with coffee in it. Quite unique to me. GreatLibations (1444), Last Supper, Arizona, USA

A cold pour serves up a coffee brown color and a tall lingering froth that reduces to a fluffy canopy and lace w/ sticky snail tracks on the sidewalls. The aroma, a nice balance of roasted coffee and citrus rind. Medium full nectar with superb carbonation. The texture is like soft high threadcount Egyption cotton. A big malty bacobone balanced by a strong citrus rind bittering component. Mildly roasted coffee bean, cocoa, citrus peel, and leather. The finish is bittered well leaving cocoa and asprin to linger. Overall: this is one of the best brown ales I’ve had. Excellent use of hops, solid chocolate malting, just marvelous. Highly recommended. robinvboyer (1429), Sturgeon Falls, Ontario, Canada
| 4.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Jun 5, 2008 Very nice dark brown yet see through pour, with a nice off white head with some nice lacing on my glass. Nice roasted malt aroms with a good dose of hops, and a touch of chocolate, and even some tobacco. Oh wow.....the flavour is incredible. Lots of hops, but the sweet malt, and chocolate stick around with some very nice coffee undertones. The typical brown ale caramel flavour is there, and it mingles with the chocolate, and the hops beautifully. I could drink this all day, this is an incredible beer! another triumph for Mikkeller!
