Also leaves a decent lace on its way down the glass. Was a little taken a back by the hops at first but then I remembered it was a Mikkeller brew. Aroma is a little citrus hop and some roasted chocolate malt. Pretty unique and interesting combo. Chocolate flavors on the front palate and then the citrusy hop finish are pretty interesting and unconventional for a brown ale but work well here. highlandlad (1268), Sydney, Australia

Don’t make me put my foot in your ass. What we got here is one hell of a tribute beer from the brothers in Denmark. Now I don’t know much about no muthafuckin’ "brown ales" but I can tell you this here is serious as cancer. The very best there is. When you absolutely, positively got to kill every motherfucker in the room, accept no substitutes. It looks mighty fine - as brown and smooth as a baby’s ass. And if it’s good head you’re after, well mistuh, you come to the right place. Sure smells good. Milo, coffee, maple syrup, all them good things. Mmm-mm. S’all soft and creamy in the mouth like a milk shake. It don’t pussy-foot around, neither - this beer has big fuckin’ flavours that hit ya bang upside the head. Licorice, chocolate milkshake and strong, strong coffee. When I get my shit done for the day and I want to get high, this is the beer I want to have in my fridge. There’s only three reasons why you shouldn’t try this beer. One, you’re in a hospital. Two, you’re in jail. Three, your ass is dead. Booh-yah! (750ml bottle courtesy of Papsoe - thanks Henrik, this one is a beauty. Shared at the RateBeer Sydney Jan 07 gathering) JaBier (1233), Capital City, Ohio, USA

Bitter hop flavor up front that transitions nicely to a roasty coffee finish. zebracakes (1216), Washington DC, USA

Pours dark, clear ruby brown, big fluffy off white head. Aroma is smoke, chocolate, coffee, malt, vanilla, pine, anise. This has quite a big aroma for a beer that looks like it will have a weak body.
Flavor is hops, pine, caramel, anise, some syrup, bitter chocolate and coffee. I am impressed with the flavor. There’s nothing weak about the body of this beer; looks can be deceiving my friends. Ober (1214), Bommelerwaard, Netherlands

The aroma of coffee malts with hops and some fruits. The taste of coffee with fruits. It’s dry and bitter. Hints of vanilla. The aftertaste is bitter coffee, with some fruits. Rich thick brown black colors, with some orange corners where the light can get through. Decent head. Amazingly fresh aroma of syrupy hops. The taste is quite nice and hoppy as well, with no spiciness, just an earthy sweet bitterness. This beer is awesome, maybe the best brown ale I’ve ever had. The malts are there, they just happen to be perfectly balanced with the unapologetic hops. Bittersweet dark malt aftertaste. Another amazing beer from Mikkeller. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 29, 2008 Pours a dark mahogany brown with a rocky off white head that dissipates to wisp of foam on top leaving very good lacing. The smell surprised me with the hops, much hoppier than the normal American brown with the big fresh pine hops popping up front. There is also a slight burnt coffee smell with chocolate as well all on top of a faint sweet malt background. There is a more pronounced roasted malt flavor up front than in the aroma, but that is really just an intro to the big piny fresh hop flavor. The coffee and chocolate are still there but more in the background in the taste. The finish is back to the hop bitterness, almost an IPA-like aftertaste. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with strong carbonation and the hoppiness tingles the tongue more than just about any brown I’ve tasted. This is one of the more interesting brown ales I’ve tasted as Mikkeller has amped up the hoppiness in this one. Drinkability is probably a little diminished by the hop bitterness, but not too bad. Complex, tasty, and highly recommended.
