The smell surprised me with the hops, much hoppier than the normal American brown with the big fresh pine hops popping up front. There is also a slight burnt coffee smell with chocolate as well all on top of a faint sweet malt background. There is a more pronounced roasted malt flavor up front than in the aroma, but that is really just an intro to the big piny fresh hop flavor. The coffee and chocolate are still there but more in the background in the taste. The finish is back to the hop bitterness, almost an IPA-like aftertaste. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with strong carbonation and the hoppiness tingles the tongue more than just about any brown I’ve tasted. This is one of the more interesting brown ales I’ve tasted as Mikkeller has amped up the hoppiness in this one. Drinkability is probably a little diminished by the hop bitterness, but not too bad. Complex, tasty, and highly recommended. NosirIwont (1186), Aalborg Vestby, Denmark
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Sep 4, 2007 Bottle. 7 days past ’best before’. Pours a hazy mahogany colour with a big light brown head. Nice lacing. Nicely balanced malty and hoppy aroma with notes of chocolate, licorice and coffee. Flavour is fruity and malty. Finish is fruity with a licorice bitterness. Lingering apple notes. Remote notes of coffee appears as it warms. Quite an interesting brown ale; I usually find brown ales to be rather dull, but this one was something, although the ‘brown ale-ness’ was well-hidden in hops and other good stuff. Go Mikkeller! 05-09-07. Miguel (1181), Saint-Ours, Quebec, Canada

Great chocolate aroma with a dose of hops. Dark brown with a slight head. The palate is incredibly full for this style. Yeasty, hoppy, and malty flavors combine for a complex and wonderfull experience. A million thanks to Sliffy for sharing. nate2g (1139), Brisbane, Australia
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jun 26, 2009 Bottle. Pours dark brown with a huge light brown head that slowly diminished. Rich malt aroma, chocolate, caramel, toffee and light floral hop notes. The flavour is chocolate, caramel, toffee, nuts and citrusy hops. Good carbonation and finishes dry and bitter. It’s pretty hopped up for a brown ale, though it works well and the rich malt balances it out nicely. Very tasty! ericandersnavy (1138), crossroads, Texas, USA

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Aug 17, 2008 Bottle purchased at Sam’s Wine & Spirits in Chicago. Pours a hazy chocolate brown with a loose, fluffy, light tan head that diminishes leaving sticky lace on the mug. The nose is of roasty, chocolate malt backed by faint coffee, "green"/floral hops and light anise; interesting. Medium-bodied and slick with a bitter-hopped and roasty finish. Roasted chocolate malt, coffee and solid, resinous hops. The hops certainly dominate on this one. I’d be curious to see if allowing this one a bit of time to age would balance it out a bit. It’s very good as it is, but I would enjoy a bit more malt in the flavor profile. Garrat (1132), Suffolk, England
