| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jun 16, 2007 Had a strong powdered chocolate aroma. On tasting it was very much dry cocoa and chocolate liqueur. A nicely balanced flavour with some dry roasty bitterness. Some nuttiness on the aftertaste which seemed most like hazelnut to me - sort of like hazelnut coffee maybe. Very easy drinking but with plenty of interesting qualities - a very pleasing brown ale. Roasty aroma together with coffee, wood and hops. Roasted coffee taste among others. Great finish and pleasant aftertaste. i wish i could have tried more Mikkellers. madmitch76 (645), , Essex, England
| 2.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 9/20 | Nov 15, 2009 20th July 2008. Brown beer. Distinct chocloate tone but it jars against the very bitter hop finish. Better when it warms up a bit - doesn’t clash quite as much but these flavours are uncomfortable bed fellows.
Conscious of my comparatively low rating have since retried this beer but still fail to see why it averages 3.7. Habanero (636), Tranbjerg, Denmark

| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jul 22, 2009 BB 2-9-11. Pours a nearly opaque, rusty brown color with a massive, khaki, creamy, fluffy, float-like head which lasts for a long while but does finally rescinds allowing me to take a sniff while showing some lace rings. The nose is complex and fairly hoppy, especially for a brown ale, much like a brown IPA or pale; notes of centennial and simcoe hops with a rustic tone, some light floral, light orange peel, dark bread crust, roasted pecans, some malted notes, and light notes of kona coffee and chocolate; a lot going on in the nose but everything works well together. The flavor is nice but not matching the nose, dry, hoppy flavor with some dry malt notes as well. Noting a more-than-moderate, herbal hop bitterness and light coffee bitterness throughout with other notes of light dry grass, malted cocoa, light grapefruit peel, pecans, and similar bread crust notes. Moving into the finish I get just hints of anise and dark chocolate. Palate is a little watery, silky, less-than-medium, and soft to lively, oh yeah, and dry; silky and dry in the same palate?? The finish is dry, moderately bitter still with some lighter sweet notes of the dark chocolate and light anise, light coffee bitterness, some lingering herbal/floral hop bitterness, and dark bread crusts still continuing to sit on the tongue. I do not know where to begin with this one; an excellent, intriguing nose with some dissimilar flavors that seem to fit perfectly together but the flavor carries so many dry notes which overwhelm the nice complexities of the beer. If I had to change something with the beer, I would say maybe changing the nugget to something less bitter thus allowing more sweet malt notes to emerge and less dry, bitter notes. Either way, a great brown ale with an intoxicating nose. wickedpete (629), Lexington Park, Maryland, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Mar 3, 2008 Thanks to Ken for this one. Clear brown body, pillowy beige head which persists. Piney hop aroma. Flavor is roasted and ashy, hoppy bitter. A strong dry bitterness lasts. Cirrhosis (623), Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

Dark brown body with a huge off white cap. Aroma is sweet and malty and blow my mind awesome. Hops are noticeable but not citrusy (thank gawd) some coffee shows up in the aroma as well. I’ve never smelt anything so good in the style. Very malty taste with blueberry, dusty coffee, apricot, some citrus (but hard to find) and a extreme bitter chocolate after taste. Feel is a touch off for me with its chalky dryness. This is so bold and rich you could easily call this a porter instead of a brown ale. The aroma for this stuff is awesome the taste gets lost a little in its intensity but still good."
